Hey everyone,

   Just wondering what you use split shot rigs for? I fish mostly from the bank of a small resevoir, alot of the time from a dam. Would it be worth my while to split shot soft plastics and drag them on the bottom as opposed to weightless techniques? The water is pretty shallow, around 6 feet deep at most. Thanks

I've had good luck using them from shore.  Zoom trick worms on spinning tackle with light line is killer for me.  I've tried it on a casting rig too, but for me a spinning rod works way mo' betta'.  I'd give it a shot when nothin' else gets their attention.  Good luck.

Flylining is my Last resort. And yep, I do the splitshot thang alot. One way instead of using a splitshot, is to use a Mojo dropshot weight, i.e. pencil weight, gets hung up in rocks and weeds way less..downside is, you can't pinch it to remove it.. ;D

I use this technique for all plastic's, worms, lizards, craws, creatures and sometimes shallow cranks..

Try a couple of different size trick worms.

I like the GYCB 6 1/2" Kut Tail, but the Zoom

trick worm is easier to find.

Substitute the split shot with a small 1/16 - 1/8 oz. bullet sinker ahead of a small swivel and a fluoro leader of appropriate test. Can't beat the trick worms for this lightweight carolyna rigging. I find this worm has a tendency to lift off the bottom as you retrieve it slowly, giving it plenty of action. This system hangs less than split shots do, as well.

The cut tails seem to me to be a bit too heavy for split shotting; you can use those without any weight at all and perform a very effective slow, on-bottom retrieve.

Its one of my go-to techniques for mid summer.. I fish it more like a carolina rig, very slow pulls.. and a short leader, only about 10"...   I also use a bull shot sinker, little more weedless.

Instead of round split shot, try Water Gremlin Bull Shot.

Add your favorite weight above the swivel

The best lure application I have found for split shotting or Carolina rigging is a red label 3X worm or lizzard.

Don't know where you heard that, but it simply is not true. A 3X Strike King worm on an Ike's Spike jighead was my #1 producer this year.

Paul, yes it is. The red label ones float and the purple label ones have salt in them so they sink.

No, they don't have a scent/taste that repels fish and the extra softness of the plastic encourages the fish to hold on.

Try a drop-shot rig above your split-shot,Carolina rig,or even your sinko with a nail in it.Take a six penny nail trim to desire wait, insert and play.

Paul, any soft plastic lure will melt some plastics that are not suited for storing soft plastic lures in or on. Fiberglass and aluminum is not affected.

The 3X type material is best stored in the original package or discarded after use. Do not mix that material with any other plastic lures (a warning is printed on each package).

like wayne said, do not put any 3x (elaztech) baits with other plastic lures. the elaztech will melt and make a nice goo that is near impossible to get rid of.

it does NOT melt in your typical plano tackle boxes. but keep them seperate from your other plastic lures.

strike king zulu's and zero's are my fav. elaztechs.... but im looking forward to new designs now that sk. isnt the monopoly on them.
