I fished Seymour pond in Brewster last night in 15 mph winds, fog, and drizzle.  I threw the kitchen sink.  Caught 1 little smallmouth on a white spinnerbait and hooked a 1.5-2 lb smallmouth but lost it right as I got it back to the boat.  Only other fish I caught was a perch on a one-knocker lipless crankbait.  Water temp was 64 degrees.  I did see a 3+ lb smallmouth cruising the shallows but it headed for deepwater when it saw my kayak.

At 64 degrees, I'd bet that most of the largemouth bass are still pre-spawn. Down in Connecticut, although I've seen bass on beds, most of the beds have been occupied by sunnies. And most of the bigger bass I've seen have been roaming around the deeper outside weedlines and edges of lily pad beds. The crazy weather has definitely confused the spawn.

Had the day off so I figured I'd try Wampatuck State Park.  I launched around 11:30 and started on the southern two points.  The weather was great and water temps in the low 60's.

 

I over shot a cast and wrapped my Swimsenko around a tree limb hanging over the water.  I untied it and continued on, but as I left, something felt different. I turned around to see my favorite setup in the water.  Unfortunately I was in my 128T with trolling motor and couldn't get turned quick enough to get to it.  Say goodbye to a 8.1:1 Co****t C and Veritas.

 

I shrugged it off best I can ???, and continued on.  If you've never fished Wampatuck, it's texbook: points, drop offs, islands, lilly pads, grass, rocks, et al.  I wrapped it up at 5:00, with two Crappie and a big Pickerel to show for it (all on a wacky 4" Senko).

 

The highlight, other than the weather, were the skads of turtles sunning on tree limbs and the baby Copperhead that swam near me.  That's the second copperhead I've seen at Wampatuck in my lifetime.

 

I might go back for the rod with some gear to help me see down there, who knows. I tried it two years ago when my Villain and Supreme XT sank in Ponkapog but came up empty.

 

Regardless, I'm off to Webster before dawn and plan two things: catch some nice bass and keep all my gear in the boat!

 wompatauck looks killer, havent fished it much, havent done good there. i gota give it another shot

went out 5pm to 11pm  found access to new spots. few hits, went back to an old favorite for a night bite. lost 2 large fish, i was fishing a molix beetle. its a frog style lure with a jitter bug style action, slow twitched along a weed edge. caught one 2.10 on a swimbait after dark, few more hits.  im headed out tonight for a night bite, i plan on staying till 2 am tonight! 

problem is WHERE TO GO!!! !!

How are you all doing? It's been a while and Little League season will be over next week. I'm hoping to get out and do some fishing on Sunday. I went maybe 2 times earlier in the spring and caught mostly stocked trout with a couple of snot rockets mixed in. Anyway, it was fun to wet a line.

Fishing Rhino and I launched from Lake Chaubunagungamaug just before dawn.  It was 50-ish and foggy, but the first SMB came at 5:04 AM on a perch Whopper Plopper.  The sun came out later in the morning and the fish cooperated until lunch time, took a break, and were sporatic the rest of the afternoon.  I caught 11 assorted SMB and LMB with the biggest a 3-4 Larry.  Fishing Rhino caught 2 (or more) for every one of mine, with a few nice LMB north of 2 pounds.   The most productive lures of the day were the Whopper Plopper, Binsky, and wacky Senko.

 

Water temps were in the mid 60's when we packed up a little after 3:00 PM.

 

Tomorrow's adventure might be a trip back to Wampatuck with a set of goggles and waterproof flashlight to see if I can retrieve my lost baitcast rig.

I've fished it on and off for 30+ years and have never caught any bass bigger than a pound.  I've talked to other folks fishing there who've caught good size bass, with pictures to prove it.  JG233 fished it with me and came up with a 3+ pound Larry.  You'll have to ask him what he used.

 

Most say it's a tough pond to figure out.  I'm half convinced it's mostly panfish.  

I'm thinking tomorrow morning is an A1/Chick-fil-a kinda day

Both fish I got at Wampatuck were on the Ned Rig. 

Didn't have time for A1 so I'm at my normal spot.Been tough the last few times out but caught 2 in the 1st 15 minutes.Nothing worth weighing but o e nice fish about 2lbs.Nice beautiful healthy looking fish.

good luck man!! it would be pretty cool to see whats down there! i heard good things about it.  i want to fish it with big swimbaits! maybe thats the key

Speaking of big swimbaits, and just out of curiosity, have you tried Joe's 10" real prey trout? I'm debating whether to get a heavier swimbait setup come fall and that would be one I might be interested in along with some 8" hudds. I've seen pictures of it besides a Hudd and it dawrfs the hudd though lol.

i never really fish those giant baits biggest i use is a 10 inch slammer thats the only 1 i got. i normally use 8-9 hard baits. 
6 inch soft baits. i love joes perch shiner and alewife never used anything else from him

Yea it is pretty giant lol. I'll probably just start simple with a pair of hudds and see what happens. The perch he makes is probably my favorite soft bait though. It looks so real. 

yea the hudds are killer i do own an 8inch hudd, i havent used it much, people get huge fish on em. 6inch and 68s are better producers for me. 

I took a dive to try to get my rig back. Even with my FD issued flashlight I couln't see more than a foot in front of me. It was like swimming in coffee.  

 

A coworker has scuba gear and offered to try for me.

 

On the way back I though about my lack of sucess there. It's the darkest water I know of. Perhaps a change to louder/brighter baits is necessary.....

Went frog fishing at the Charles River yesterday. Ended up with two bass, my first ones of 2017 on a frog and one of them being my PB on a frog.

How deep is the place where you lost your setup?

Against my better judgement, I'm off to South Watuppa this morning.  I'm not expecting much, but we shall see.  It's close by, and has two nice ramps with a good parking area.

 

On another note.  Went to Webster with DogBone last week, and was pleasantly surprised.  Hadn't been there since they killed off most of the vegetation.  Actually, I had been there a few times after they treated, or should I say mistreated the lake a few years ago.  

 

The town/state is up to more mischief on Webster.  A poster at the state ramp noted that on June 13, the lake would be treated to reduce the "noxious" vegetation.  Noxious to who or what?  In any case, I suspect that this "treatment" will wipe out the recovery from their last "treatment".

Some of the coves on the south side have made a real nice recovery and offer some nice weed edges and clusters. I don't get why people want to get rid of it all. The lake is plenty deep to find places for recreational use even if there are weeds on the bottom.

If it was me I'd tie on a deep diver, up the treble size, and start casting. Or even just get a 2/0 treble, wrap some lead wire around the shank, tie it to some heavy braid or mono and drag it in that area. I'm not sure what kind of snags and cover are there though. Good luck!

Just in time to remove any protective cover from the emergent fry.... Soon...without weeds and without fishermen... it will be the perfect spot to waterski and jetski... leaving many lakes open and available to be fished in peace. Even fishing with gators is better than battling "stupid".  

Thanks for the advice MassYak85. A coworker has dive gear and offered to give it a try for me.  The water is very stained but the rod & reel are both white.  He'll be able to stay down there and hopefully come up with it.

The day brought back many memories of fishing in "Island Cove" the coontail covered shallow at the north end of Indian Ranch Cove, the rocky shoal in the middle of the center pool.  Too bad you weren't there to enjoy it.  I have been using a new bait that might have given me the edge in the Al Lindner trophy competition.  

 

It's the Binsky Blade.  I caught smallmouth, largemouth, pickerel, crappie, yellow perch, bluegill and sunfish on the outing.  No trout or catfish however.

I'm glad you guys are catching them because I've been out five times since being down here and have 4 fish to show for it...and I'm like 80% sure I caught the same fish on two separate occasions. I'm not sure if it's me or the places I'm fishing just getting a ton of pressure. Granted no one I've talked to while out there was having a good day either so I'm not really sure how to approach this. Muddy water, and textbook looking reservoirs, but I can't seem to find fish. So far my best luck has come imitating shad, either with a crank or a fluke. It didn't help I messed up every hook set with the fluke when I got bit either.
