I Need Advice Fast!

Featured Replies

So basically I have been offered a position at a big company and its a great opportunity with great pay and benefits. Well on te application a question asked have you been convicted of a crime? I read that to mean felonies and checked no. I have a misdimeanor conviction 20 yrs ago and now am worried that the background check will come back with that on my record an the offer will be recended. So I guess my question is do

I call the company and explain the mistake or just let it go and see what happens?

I should also mention that my gut is to always be honest but am worried that they will view it as admitting to false info and recent the offer.

Be honest.

Did you not try and get it expunged? Most misdemeanors, unless it is a "sex crime" can be expunged after 5 years, especially if you have no other record. I think after 25 years, they would understand you not including a misdemeanor. But if it does come up, obviously be honest!

A few years ago I had some thing show up in a background check. They funny thing it was some thing I was never brought up on. Any way since that day. I just tell them the truth any more.

I think if you call and tell them then it will look like you intentionally omitted it, but now your regretting it.

What part of the question led you to believe it was for felonies only anyway?

I would leave it alone until asked, if they even ask. But if they do, then you can give the lame excuse that you thought it meant only felonies.

I would be willing to be they are only looking for a felony conviction. If they confront you about it, be honest. You have nothing to worry about.

What was her name and why wouldn't she listen? :threaten:

Criminal records are public record, there are a number of web sites that you can check your own background for a nominal fee. If nothing shows up, keep quiet, if something does then make a decision on your course of action.

I doubt they'll be very concerned with something that happened 20 years ago if you've kept your nose clean since then. If they do mention it just be honest with them and tell them you thought it was referring to felonies.
