Along comes the "Backstabber"! Yep....it's a new kind of crankbait which was reviewed this week on "Fishing University". Picture a normal crankbait....with the belly hook on the back instead of the belly.  And both this top hook and the back hook are on swivels to boot.

It is an interesting idea, just not something I think I need out of life.

Looks a lil gimmicky to me.....not to mention the crankbaits look cheaply made. I cant image how the crankbait could work right and wiggle with that large hook hanging above it. Seems to me it would get in the way of the action. Just my opinion though.

I saw those too, C/L, but i only saw the rattlebait in the under-water veiw. I was watching my 5 yr. old neice and didn't get to watch as closely as i wanted.The hooks were on swivels? Anyways..the Capt. said he's seen them before..i'll have to go to his link.   Later......

it will work, no doubt about that, because the hooks are spaced out about the same distance they would be on a normal crankbait, but it is 100% unnecessary for that exact same reason...

I'm surprised by all the negative comments about these things. I spend a lot of time fishing crankbaits and my lure is almost always in contact with something. I like to fish them so that they're just touching the bottom or the top of the grass. I am convinced that the majority of my hangups are caused by that belly hook. I'm not saying that they're going to be the next great thing, but they are worth trying. Coonedawg, why do you think they look cheaply made?

I was not trying to ruffle any feathers, I guess the bodies of the bait resemble other cheaply made baits I have seen in the past or maybe I just don't see the bait as practical. It may just be that I consider $15 dollars to high for a bait like that considering they are charging JDM quality prices for a bait I'm sure doesnt cost that much to produce. But, its someones design and someone elses company, therefore I'm not going to knock it until I fish it. :D

They show up every now and then. Didn't buy them then, and not now.

Looks like that top hook would get snagged in cover more often than the regular belly hook.  The bill on regular cranks protect that hook from getting snagged too much. It seems to me that the top hook is asking to get hung up.

I think some of you may be missing the point on this new introduction. First and foremost, the intent of this creation is to hook bass in the top of the mouth vs. the side or bottom jaw. This feature, along with the swivel hooks, is an attempt to decrease lost fish during the battle. Outside of that, it looks about as good as any other crank bait out there to me.

Can't imagine why anyone would think they are cheaply made? But I guess that's why each have an opinion. The did get a pretty decent work-out on the TV program and the inventor went into great detail as to how they developed this lure. To me, it just looks like another good example of American ingenuity. I especially like the idea of having the hooks on swivels as well. I may pick up a couple afterall. 

I saw that fishing university too and thought this was actually a neat idea, the way they explained it made plenty of sense.  It seemed like alot of thought went into the design and they said they had to redesign the weight distribution and dynamics.

They are a bit pricey but I think they look good and from the show, it seemed that all the fish were hooked in the top of the mouth.

No different than adding a small treble to the top arm of a buzzbait or a stinger to a soft swimbait.
