I finally got my fat ikas in yesterday.  I tried them this morning where I was already catching fish.  I had one bite but I missed.  I don't think I am using the appropriate set-up. 

I only have one spinning rod and it is a extra fast action medium power rod.  I have about 5 or 6 baitcasting rods that are medium fast to medium heavy. 

I have read the article from roadwarrior and I do not have the setup that he suggest.  What would be the best way to fish this according to what I have?

i would go mh fast personally. i think your m would work depending on brand.

I use a medium heavy spinning rod for most smaller plastics. Usually I use medium casting gear for plastics 5" or over.

I use a 7' MF..and this is for weightless, and long cast's. I do use the same set up if I add a weight also.

You didn't say what length your spinning rod is, but a 6' 6" or 7' MXF is a perfect choice in most situations for this bait IMHO. Your MF baitcast would be my second choice. I would only use a heavier power rod in very heavy cover FWIW.

Mine is a MH, 7' long Berkley Tactix Wacky rod.

anything MH for sure. ikas have a lot of plastic for the hook to penatrate. also what sizw hooks are you using? its best to have a 4/0 ewg worm hook for ikas.

I use either a BCR852 or MBR842 casting rod.

I use a 6 foot 8 inch,Medium, Extra Fast, legend tournament and with a 4/0 Gamakatsu EWG, I've never had any issues on hook sets. Granted, I don't know if its the softer nature of Yamamoto Plastics or the fast tip, but it seems to me every fish is hooked picture perfect.

I use a 7' Medium power spinning rig for those and soft jerkbaits, and don't have any problem with getting a hook in the fish, but I'm also using the superline/fluoro leader thing, so that helps. 8-)

Your rod is fine. For everyone else, whatever you

like to use for weightless soft plastics is all that's

needed for Fat Ika.

Usually, the issue with hook-ups is just quickness.

Use a snap-set: When you detect a bite, lower your

rod tip as you reel down quickly. Snap your wrist

without moving your hand position relative to your

body. This will move the rod tip from 9:00 to 12:00

and drive the hook home!

I like a MXF 6' or 6'6" baitcaster with 12# Flouorcarbon. The Ika has enough weight and casts great with this set up. I also like to use a Gammi 4/0 or 5/0 superline EWG for my hook. I like to pinpoint cast to targets such as pads or stick-ups so spinning gear is not for me. I have found that a Bass will not drop the Ika so you don't have to set the hook as soon as you feel a tap. I watch the the line and when it starts to move then I set it. But don't wait to long because they tend to get the bait too deep.

I suggest that you use the same rod you use for Senko's if you fish that bait.

Thanks for all the replies.  I don't think my problem was the rod.  I was using the wrong style hooks.
