hey guys im thinking about getting a rod and reel setup for deep diving cranks. im not sure what rod to get im thinking either the duckett 7'11 cranking rod, or either a kistler magnesium or helium both are 7'9 and throw 1/4-1 1/2oz lures. im probably going to match it up with a lews BB1 or Tournament mg. what do you guys think about a 5.1:1 or a 5.4:1 gear ratio for this type of setup. im also going to finish the setup off with suffix flourocarbon unless otherwise warned. also some suggestions on deep diving crankbaits and colors would be greatly appreciated.

St Croix LTB Big Cranker + Abu Garcia gen 3 winch

Low gear ratios are good for deep cranking. 4.7 to 5.4 is good. Lews is a good choice.

Im not big on Kistlers. But Powell makes good rods. They actually have a 711MH deep cranking model available through TW. They have a 7'5MH in the endurance line.

St. Croix big cranker is a very good option too.

I just like a long MH rod for deep cranking.

Dobyn's 805CBRM is a great big crankbait rod. Shimano Calcutta C300D reel.

Pricy, but will last a very long time.

i have the mojo bass deep crankbait rod from st. croix paired with a lews reel and i really like that combo and the rod won't set u back that much. i've never tried the suffix fluro but i can vouch for the sunline sniper fluro that stuff is the best i've tried. 

The bb1 in a 5;4 ratio would be ideal for lews. I suggest the abu revo winch though. Either way you will be happy with your choice.

thanks for the info guys im thinking the mojo glass biggest crankbait rod and im sticking to the lews... i have such a bad history with abu garcias i dont thibk i will buy any of their products they always break on me. any suggestions on crankbaits and colors? thanks

St Croix Legend Tournamet 7'10" Magnum cranker, Curado 201DPV. The Magnum cranker will handle the bigger deeper baits better than the 7' MH "Big Cranker", but below 1/2 oz. it's not a good choice.

i would love a st croix tournament but there is no way i can afford one 

also the big cranker is 7'8" and will throw 3/8 to an oz

Both Excellent for DEEP CRANKIN  The Calcutta has no equal here, But I would pair it with the St. Croix big cranker, although the Lamiglass is abetter choice than the Duckett or Kistler, but nothing beats an American made Croix!!  

MY goto Combo for deep cranking is Denali Jadewood 7'6" with Microguides paired with a Abu Garcia Revo Winch.  I throw DD-22's and 6XD's all day with that setup.

What depth range is deep for you ?  What is the forage base where you fish ?  Do you have clear, stained of murky water ?   Spend the extra 20 bucks and get the BB1 over the MG.

Good! Decide on a rod yet?

I used the BB1 yesterday for the first time on the water. I was very impressed. I haven't used the winch, but my experience with the Lew's TP vs the Abu STX 3rd gen makes me think I made the right decision for my new cranking reel. It's butter smooth and casts a mile with little effort cranking those deep running baits. Now I'm looking into the Powell diesel glass cb rod to pair it with.

I have the diesel cranking rod and love it. What kind of cranks are you looking at using?

Deep runners. Any thing from DT-10's to the new strike king 10XD's which run about 25 feet.
