I heard about this. Makers is my favorite bourbon;it makes me sad they water it down... idk if it taste the same.. since tonight is Valentines I treated myself to scotch. Johnnie walker.

I think this will decimate their sales.  Any firm willing to lower their standard just to keep up with demand is asking for trouble. 

 

One of the reasons why I will only drink PappyVan Winkle.  The fact that they will stick to their guns and not overproduce at risk of lower quailty is honorable!

Probably so. Supply and demand theory dictate they should raise price. Obviously they drunk too much of their product to understand this.

This reminds me of when there was a run on Oban (single malt scotch), it went dry for a while and was a PITA to get. The good thing was they never lowered their standards and they got through it.

In fact they are raising it!   Scheduled for a mid year raise in price not to be at the same time of the release of the lower proof!  I just got a shipment in of the 90 proof, calling all Memphians!!!  Our wholesaler ran completely out for the month of December.  It was scarce around here.

Jack has gone from 86 to 80 and it actually didn't hurt them.  I suspect this is what Makers is looking at.  Difference is Jack is a TN whiskey ages for less than 4 years.  Makers is an actual bourbon and aged for an average of 6 years.

There are many bourbons for the same price that are just as good

If you want something good try small batch Templtons Rye or blantons single barrel. Some buffalo trace for something comprable to makers it rates high for those looking to switch.

Those are only 2. There are so many quality bourbons that are out there, I could never list them all.

I think it's really good. I've noticed a lot of high priced liquors in the store. I've always been reluctant to pull the trigger on a such bottles. It got me thinking one night, if we blind tested someone with a high dollar whisky and low dollar whisky will they consistently choose the high priced one? The hypothesis I had in mind is that if the person doesn't know the brand's reputation and its price they have no expectation. Where if they knew all of the reputation and price, their mind will trick them saying the drink was really good when in reality they couldn't tell difference from low end to high end. I asked my bestfriend, who is a psychology and biology major, he said they have done similar testing on wine. The study revealed something interesting, ordinary people could not tell the difference between cheap and expensive wine, while aficionados could. So, give Maker's a shot before they lower the proof rating, I think it a (or should I say was) fine bourbon. I can drink it neat and enjoy a slow pleasant buzz that helps me think and give me a good sleep without hangover bearing I don't drink too much.

Beam isn't bad for its price, especially the rye. Evan Williams is another cheaper but decent drinker. The 15.00 bottle is dang good for everyday use.

Knob, bookers, basil hayden, woodford > makers. Tough to support that kind of flawed reasoning!

We do blind tastings all the time.  My employees and myself can usually pick out the better one.  Not necessarily the higher priced one.   Our customers seem to pick out the lower proofed sweeter bourbon.

for bourbon i will stick to my Wild Turkey Rare Breed all day long, im sure there are better ones, but this one i like, not to mention its 108.2 proof. i usually fall just short of a pint in a night of solid drinking. a pint isnt much, but its $20 for that pint. after drinking most of that pint i feel a little dehydrated, but i never get a hangover...
