Bionic Baitcaster @bps Spring Sale

Recommended Posts

Well after pre shopping at BPS for spring sale I will definitely be trying to get the Bionic baitcaster combo. This will be my first baitcaster I was wondering what line . It will be a all around setup.dont have enough money to spend on bunch of rods and reels for different lures I throw. Think I already ruled out flourocarbon because of price and water we fish in isn't that clear.

Thanks

Ed

You can use some yozuri hybrid in 12-15lb tests. You can get it cheap in 600yd spools. About 12 dollars online, sports authority, cabelas,

Its about 11 bucks for 275 yards at bps, but there may be tons of lines on sale

------ or

You can buy a braid, 30-50lb,  if you plan to frog fish or have alot of vegetation. Use the electrical tape trick on the spool to help with backlashes until you get familiar.

Terrible choice for topwater. Buy a copolymer or monofilament.

Wrong....Braid is great for topwater it actually floats unlike mono that most people seem to think does.  I can see where stretch helps with topwater, but he will figure out to slow down a pinch before setting the hook.

20's diameter is too small for a baitcaster in my opinion, 30 is as low as I go and thats still pushing it. I imagine 20 would dig into the spool bad.

I cant stand mono or copoly on anything but a spincast. Even then it needs some coxing if its above 8lb. Line memory drives me insane.

There are valid reasons on why different lines will or will not work.  The common variables regardless of line choice are drag setting and hookset.  With topwaters, it can be difficult to teach yourself to "not set the hook" when you see that first strike.  All you need to do is keep the line relatively taught and slowly sweep the rod to the side.  The drag is another important factor when "dialing in" your topwater setup.  For me, a light drag is a good option when paired with a rod that is not a dedicated topwater rod.  As we all know, not all actions are equal, as well as power ratings.  For me, I typically set the drag so that I can pull line off with a little effort but the drag kicks in in the event that I "overset" the hook on my sweep or hookset motion.  Kind of goof-proofing it if you will.  Just remember that the drag setting will need to be adjusted accordingly if this will be a rod you will be using for different levels of the water column.  Another trick I use (since I use braid myself) is to allow a little "s" curve in the line when walking or popping the lure.  This gives you an additional split second delay when the fish takes the lure.  It serves three purposes: 1) Helps minimize jerking the lure from the fish's mouth; 2) It helps minimize the amount of movement or action with each rod movement; 3) Allows enough slack for the fish to take the lure and turn away thus increasing the chances of a good hookset when you sweep to the side.

Thanks for all the replys. Thinking either copoly line or braid with copoly leader.I did read that adding a filler line ,cheap mono 10 lb or so 1/3 of the spool then go with braid it helps in not cutting into spool.

I'd go as far as 1/2 the spool if you are going for braid, you would then have enough line from the single braid spool to re-spool 1-2 more times after.
