Bad Word

Featured Replies

Every time I am on this site, or any other forum-type site for that matter, I keep seeing and reading one word that drives me nuts. NEWBIE! Newbie, noob, newb, whatever! Where did this horrible word come from and why do people still use it, or ever start using it for that matter? Maybe its just me, but reading that dreaded word drives me nuts. Sorry...had to vent. And no offense to the newbies.

You'll understand one day........when you're not a NEWBIE anymore!

Welcome to BR!

You forgot "minnow","dink" and "fry"

Its not just forums or bass fishing.  The terms used in skating, videogames, and just about anything else.  I personally don't mind being referred to as a noob.  At least not as far as fishing goes.  In a few years I might have a different opinion but for now, its pretty applicable.

I see the new guys refer themselves as noobs more than anything. I don't recall Any of the older members on here refer to or call anyone a noob.

It's just a way for the new folks to settle in and gain acceptance I guess.

It's all good, IMHO.

I agree with this.  I don't think I've ever heard it used here in a negative way.

I think it probably started in the gaming world. I've been a gamer most of my life, it's become normal to see it used pretty much. You can't play an online game these days without being called a noob in some way. It's like every other sentence contains the word.

And you forgot the traditional gamer spelling (or leet-speak) n00b or also nub.

Apparently "newbie" and its many variants actually came from British public school slang for "new boy", not the online world. I've heard the word since the 1980s in the online communities though the experts say it came from an Internet newsgroup.

I don't see 'grasshopper' or, as we used to say in the army; FNG.

1980s online communities?  Did you create the Internet? :Idontknow:  :laugh5:

The internet has been around since the 1960s in one form or another but it wasn't the only online communities back then. There were also things called BBS (Bulletin Board Service) where you called in and did a lot of the stuff that we do on forums like this today. The most famous were things like CompuServe.

...and all this time I thought Al Gore invented it in the 90s.

Al Gore did.

I see newb used here, but not in the negative connotation or as in insult, like I see elsewhere.

I've been a member of this forum for 7 or 8 years. I read a lot but don't post that much. One of the reasons I'm still a member is that I have never seen anyone be intentionally disrespectful on this forum. Everyone tries to be helpful to anyone with a question and is welcoming to new members or beginner fishermen. As far as the term "newbie" is concerned, I have mostly seen it used by people referring to themselves. To Glen and Mods; you continue to have an informative, mannerly, and well considered forum. Thank you for your hard work.

Very nice post. I couldn't agree more.

Could be worse you could be and COD and then you get other "bad words" along with Noob!
