I've Got A Guided Striper Trip Scheduled In April

Featured Replies

Don't know how many of you guys fish for Stripers but I've gone on a guided trip once a year for the last several years. We don't always catch a lot or the biggest but I like going. My personal best is a 33 lb. It was a monster. I would be happy with a 20+ lb but we'll see how that goes. Just wanted to share with you guys.

I will be fishing for them from shore in less than a month or so. Can't wait to tie into my 1st striper. Seen pics of some monsters coming out of the Hudson.

If things go as planned, we'll be trolling gizzard shad behind an egg sinker and leader on Lake Ouachita. Besides landing 747's, how do you boys do it on the Hudson?

We catch stripers daily here on lake lanier.I catch them on bass equipment once in a while .Most use Blue Back herring to target these fish .

We caught several on Beaver this last week on A-rigs with swimming flukes and Keitech swing impacts on 1/4oz jigheads. Not monsters to most but they were to a couple guys who'd never caught one before.

The Rig is so effective, I have almost given up on live bait.

Look for birds diving into schools of shad. My buddies are killin'

'em on the Tennessee River.

That's all we did to get ours at Beaver. Even if you didn't see any fish if the birds were diving on shad the fish were there. They weren't always stripers but you won't catch me complaining about the bonus largemouth, spots, and smallies we were catching :)

There was 5 guide boats around us when I caught my big one that were trolling shad. We pulled half a dozen off this spot before they moved off while none of the guide boats caught anything.

What rod are you using to throw "The Rig"? I almost bought a flipping stick at Academy a few months ago thinking it might be a good choice.

7' 10" H/XF BPS Extreme. I've been really impressed with how well it handles big baits and big fish so far and it isn't so heavy that it wears you out casting it all day.

Update:

Finally went on my guided trip. Got skunked. We had two bites. Supposedly this guy had been catching fish all week with clients. Out of the last three trips I think I've caught one fish.

And to top it off, I set the hook on a big fish and POW! the rod snaps above the first eye and snaps the line. Then the guy tells me "yeah, a guy stepped on that rod a few days ago. See where I had to fix these two top eyes." I was mad. That was the 1 of 2 bites for the day.

I go out a few weeks ago and land a 15 lb striper with my Veritas and a Rat'L'Trap. Needless to say I'm not paying to go striper fishing any more. My next step is to buy a flipping stick and A-rig if I want stripers. Disappointed but I have many more fishing trips to look forward to.
