St Croix Premier Medium Vs Medium Heavy

Featured Replies

Its time to replace my 2 cheap rods.  I am interested in getting a St Croix Premier spinning rod in 6'.  My local Bass Pro carries only the Medium (2 pieces) and the Medium Heavy (1 piece).

I only fish from shore and I mainly use senkos, flukes, swim baits and on occasion spinnerbaits and poppers.  As of right now, i mainly fish ponds.

I think if the medium was 1 piece my decision would already have been made.  But unfortunately no where in town sells it.

Between the 2 choices which Premier rod would you guys recommend as the best all around rod for me?

Thank you in advance.

My first thought would be the water I'm fishing, if it has a lot of vegetation I'd prefer a mh rod, if not I like a medium.  There are no industry standards, one brands med is another's mh and vice versa.

I have a premier medium in 6'6, it feels more like a MH at that length. The 6' felt the same way. It was when it got to 7' it felt closer to a medium. It did the job fine and I didn't run into any problems using it.

I wouldn't reccomend the two choices since that's all your BPS has in stock, please look around for other options

I'd want a 6'6" in a one piece medium to cover those applications.    I've used a 6'6" Premier ML for much of that without any issues, but would bump up a notch just to be safe.   A MH would be tough to "fling" light baits out there I would think.

I agree, SC rods run a little heavy.  In the spinning dept., their medium power has a ton of back bone, but still casts as easily as a med-light.

take a look at the SC webpage it lists all the specs of the rods and they are generally used for. personally I would go with the MH as that is what all my casting and one spinning rod are with either a fast or moderate tip action. also there are many places online to order the rod of your choice so don't settle on what a local store has in stock, I have about 20 SC rods and only about 5 were bought in local stores...

I'd rather order one. You save on tax, and most places ship for free if your order is over $50.

There is a BIG gap between M and MH in the Croix lineup. Their M is on the heavier side of M when compared to other's M's.

why don't you just order a medium?

Yeah i guess i could order one.  I am really picky and usually in situations like this, i like to inspect the rod in person.  Its disappointing that there is a bass pro less than 10 minutes from my house yet there is such a limited selection.  Now i need to figure out where to order it from.  Bass pro online has it in stock but charges an extra $8 cause its a 1 piece.

When you go get it from the store you have every right to inspect it. if you don't like it, you tell them to ship you another one.

Like others said, I'd go for the Medium action. It will better serve you for the fishing you want to do.

Would you guys agree then that the 1 piece medium rod would be superior to the 2 piece medium?  I was always told go for a 1 piece over a 2 piece.  Let me know what you guys think.

ALWAYS use a 1 piece rod. Much better sensitivity.

I'm starting to warm up to some of the multi-piece offerings. They aren't your grandfather's 2-piecers. They no longer have those chrome plated brass ferrules. Blank technology has come a long way over the years. The ferrules are engineered into the taper and fit quite well. There is one particular model of St Croix that I prefer the 2 piece vs the one piece. The 3S76MLXF 2 piece is a touch more powerful than the one piece.

I think you picked the right power. I have the 6'6" MH F Premier and its not what I would call a fun rod to fish, just too much power for the type of fishing I do and like you listed senkos, flukes. The 1 vs 2 pc well I dont think Croix 2pc rods give anything up compared to 1pc. My 2pc Avid is my favorite rod and I have a difficult time feeling any extra when using a 1pc LTB rod in the same power.
