The Future Of Pizza Delivery

Saw an article yesterday with this video.  Apparently Dominos over in the UK is looking at using drones to deliver pizzas in the future.  This video shows one of the test flights.  The article said it flew 4 miles in 10 minutes, faster than a delivery driver since the driver would have to deal with traffic and red lights.  Since this is only a prototype it can only carry enough weight to deliver 2 large pepperoni pizzas but they are looking at upgrading the carrying capacity to allow for larger orders to be delivered.  Looks like I could be out of a job in a few years...unless I learn to fly one of these things.

looks interesting but i dont see it happening any time soon. How would it make change? Plus with that design the pizza would get cold flying through the air.  Would we have to tip though?

There are obviously some kinks that need to be worked out and some obstacles that need to be overcome and your probably right about it not happening anytime soon.  The main problem I see is the cost of the thing.  I'm sure they're not cheap and each store would need to have several if they were planning to do away with drivers entirely.  Don't think the pizza getting cold would be an issue though.  Those hot bags are surprisingly well insulated.

Then again, I suppose Dominos could just be pulling a publicity stunt here but it's still kinda cool

love it. i can see the headlines now:

but what about in the winter time?

Guess your right...didn't think about that.  I mean, they're fine in my car even when I got my AC cranked all the way up but flying through the air in winter temps with possible snow/rain could be a completely different story.  The design definitely needs some tweaking but I'd still think it was awesome if one of those things delivered my pizza.

i'm looking forward to this. i'll be ordering more than just food :eyebrows:

I never carry cash and you can pay in full and tip via a website now, in the soon to be future I suspect more people will pay using a card/phone/internet and not cash.  Paypal is heavy vested into making your phone the new wallet, it might not be that far off that you waive your phone at said pizza droid and you have your pizza paid in full with a tip..  As for keeping it hot that is probably already taken care of again not that hard to create system that keeps food hot, they been doing it for years.  The issue I suspect is allowing these droid to fly around, few states are banning police use droids, I am sure law enforcement will argue cant have one without the other.  These patrol droids costs around 30k, fairly cheap when you consider replacing a human.  Go to school kids!!

Can it ring a doorbell? Or is it going to have some kind of bell/whistle/alarm to let you know it's there? I'm not standing outside waiting for it to get my pizza, that's why I ordered delivery, so I don't have to get up off the couch except to pay and get my pizza.

On a side note, how long before some hillbilly starts shooting them down to steal the pizzas??
