I know there are alot of threads going on like this one, but none with the models I am after. I'm looking for a rod with a max weight of 1 oz or higher. 

 

The musts: 

1. Has to be light. My Avid is 4.1 ounces. I'd like to be close to 4-5 ounces

2. Has to be very sensitive.

3. Has to have regular guides. I cant stand Micro guides. 

4. Has to have a hook keeper

5. Has to have a killer warranty.

 

The maybes:

1. I'd prefer cork handle non split grip

2. Dark or black.

 

I have a budget of around 275ish. I am using a Loomis GL2 7'1 H model 854CJWR right now. I like it, but feel that I can do better. When I bought my St. Croix Avid 70MHM, I was blow away with how sensitive it was.

 

Here are my idears so far. Rod will be my main Jig rod. Flipping jigs 1/2 oz and pitching heavy plastics/

 

G.Loomis Mossyback 7'1" Mag H BCR855. Max weight of 1oz. The reviews are soild on this one. Can't find the weight listed online on this one.Can't find any local to hold and test out.

 

St. Croix Avid 7'0" H AVC70HF.  Max weight of 1.5oz. I have held this model and it feels great. I was blown away with my MHM Avid, so one would hope this would live up to the hype.

 

13 Fishing *** Black 7'1" H or 7'3' H. Both have a max weight of 1.5oz. I have never held the ***, but I have held the ***. I will be getting an *** for flukes I was that impressed with it. Super light and felt really solid. There is a 10 dollar difference in the 7'3" over the 7'1'.

 

Dobyns Champion 7'3" MH XF FH 735.  Max weight is 1.5oz. Tackle Tour gave this rod a 7.85. Its at the max weight I would like at 5.7 ounces.

The dobyns dx 744 and 745 series rods retail for over your pricepoint. However when the sales come up over the 4th of July you should find them at 15-25% off. This would put them close to or within your range. Full grips, non micro guides, beyond well balanced, great finish, $60 no hassle warranty, cork grips and a fairly dark blank and sensitive. This would be my first pick.

Next I would look at a current or previous generation cumara like 7'2 medium heavy xf (a very powerful rod that I believe tops out at an oz). The champion series dobyns rod you noted would be nice but the extreme would be worth the exta cash IMO.

I don't think I would get a Loomis lower than an IMX if it were me. Rep sample GLX and NRX rods will push $350+ so those are out of the question. The IMX is a solid rod but I would put it under the cumara and dobyns extreme mainly because of its age and the others feel slightly more sensitive to me.

Lots of good options too including the ***, so regardless you should be getting a good upgrade over the GL2.

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't even looked at the DX. Those are gorgeous man! That might be an option if my funds get here before the sale.

 

I wasn't very impressed with the Cumara. The newest model anyway. The grip felt too short and the red kinda turned me off.

Even though it's pushing your budget I would agree with the DX 744 or 745. Personally I think the the 4 power feels a little taxed with a 1/2oz. and a trailer. the Dx 745 is just a great stick, super sensitive , great power and still has enough tip to throw a 3/8 oz jig and a small trailer like a speed craw.

  Might want to give the folks at American Legacy a call and see what they can do for you.

_{There are a couple of Kistler Helium LTA's on Ebay with full rear grips that would meet your needs, just don't know about the warranty is on them. Great rods, light and sensitive. Might be worth a look}

I am in agreement, with just 1 issue.  A current Gen Cumara wouldn't fit your requirements (small guides), but a previous Gen would be awesome.  You probably could find for cheaper too, although it's getting harder to find.  I love my Cumaras and plan to buy more previous Gen Cumaras when I can afford them/availability.  Like in the other post here is how I'd rate them with kickerfish1's recommendations.

 

GLX > Champion Extreme > Cumara > Champion > Avid > *** Black > IMX

Another vote for the dx745. Truly an awesome rod. As said don't go for the 744 regardless of what the rod ratings say it can not handle 1oz.

It is a lot heavier than you want but it is very comfortable to fish. I was (and kind of still am) a light weight junkie but the Dobyns rod really are great when it comes to fishability.

how much heavier is the 745 vs the 744? i cant decide on which one to get for pitching jigs.

DX for me as well. Hard pressed to find a better rod for that money. I got mine 275 new. 

AVC70HF is a nice rod.  Also I would look around for a good used BCR/MBR 854 GLX.  Thye can normally be had for $225-275 shipped!

The weight difference between the 744 and 745 does not feel significant in hand.

I use my 744 for pitching t-rigs with at most a 3/8oz weight plus plastic.

I use my 745 for dragging football jigs usually 1/2oz plus trailer and sometimes 3/4oz plus trailer.

DX for me as well. Hard pressed to find a better rod for that money. I got mine 275 new.

The DX 745 weighs 5.7 ounces. Because of the balance of the rods you wont notice the difference in weight.

another vote for the dx745. FANTASTIC pitching rod.

 

I believe the rod weight is 5.6oz. that may sound high but I use a chronarch 51 on mine and it balances just above the reel seat. the dobyns rods have the most ridiculous balance for rods over 7' and feel extremely light weight. 

 

I own the dx744 as well and while it is a great jig rod, i prefer it for trigs. the dx745 is just a more powerful 744.

 

if you are pitching jigs into brush that you need to haul them out of or weed cover then the 745 would be the best option. 

 

i've used 1/2oz jigs + rage craws on a 744 and it felt fine but i still prefer the 745 if you are almost always throwing 3/8oz+. the 744 does have a ton of power but the 745 is just a more beefed up version. 

I have a DX744 for pitching plastics. I have a Team Lew's Pro mounted on it and can use it all day without the slightest hesitation. Extremely light, balanced combo.

Like I said before I am very weight concious most of my reels are sub 6oz and I love the feel of a featherlight combo. I was very hesitant to get the dx's after seeing some of the weights. Got a good deal on one so I pulled the trigger. I now have 3 and they all come to every tournement.

I first bought my Dobyns to go with a Team Lew's. I was scared that it may not balance well as my Team Lew's Red was 7oz. and balanced great. The team lew's pro is even better and I am glad I did not second guess myself.

Rockchalk06 im in the same boat as you, i want both the 744 and 745 but can only afford 1, which one do i get?!?! ahhhhhh lol im really leaning 745 though

if you fish any sort of cover, get the 745. if you are pitching 1/4oz or 5/16 and below + plastics into sparse cover or under trees and such and don't plan on going over a 1/2 oz jig that often, get the 744.  the 744 still has quite a bit of backbone.
