Strike King Smokin Rooster

Featured Replies

Has anyone been having good luck on one of Strike King's Smokin Rooster's? I was sent a few packages in black/blue flake and watermelon red flake, and I'm really impressed. The action in the water is incredible, and (for me) it seems to trigger those "extra" strikes when nothing else is working.

Love em!  Awesome on a C-rig, T-rig and using it on a 1/4 oz. keel weighted 5/0 hook.

Becoming one of my favorites for pitching and flipping, though.

it's my favorite new soft plastic, I almost always have one tied on.

AWESOME BAIT!

I got it in the Bama Bug Color:

Absolutely love this bait, I need to get some more and get one of everything in the Ragetail line.

I was fishing with some clients and we couldn't get them to bite anything. So I decided to tie on a Smokin Rooster T-Rigged with a 1/8oz sinker. Hit it on the second cast:D

After reading up on these, I decided to get some.  But I'm not getting the fish everyone else seems to be getting on them.  I've been t-rigging it with a 3/16 weight and letting it set, then just twitching and jerking it on the retrieve.  How is everyone else retrieving these?

Glad you like'em MB650....Think you will find, with the exception of topwater, this design can do it all extremely well. It's one of my top two in each of these presentation techniques: C rig, Flippin, Tx rig, Swim jig or weighted hook swimmer. Don't hesitate to tip the edges of the tail and or wings with JJ's Chartreuse, This has been the ticket several times to increase the bite numbers

Here's a link with some rigging info. that might help

Funny you say this doesn't work that well for topwater, I was flipping/pitching around one of the docks here at work. I made a bad cast and reeled it in really quick to make a better cast and it was ripping across the top of the water and this nice 4lb bass came shooting out of the docka and annihilated it !!!!!

I have used them on top with success as well but let's just say I have several other choices for to consider... ;D

  • 1 month later...

If you use these with a texas rig do you typically use a bullet weight with them, and if so, what size and brand hook do you prefer and what size bullet weight?

Big O,

how are you fishing it on your C-rig? Are you using a 4/0 or 5/0?

  • Super User

I love it Tx rigged, 1/8 oz tungston weight, also dipped in the chartreuse, hopped on the bottom. Best producing color is the watermelon red. If I use it on a c rig, I drop down from a twist lock 5/0, to a standard wire Gammy 4/0 EWG.

Big O,

how are you fishing it on your C-rig? Are you using a 4/0 or 5/0?

Either one is fine but I prefer 5/0 Owner off set round bend or a Moaner 5/0 which is a screw lock style hook (Has a wider gap) and seems improve hook up% over a standard EWG. During the day time I always tip the end of the tail w/JJ's chartreuse.

Hope that helps

Where can I pick up this JJ's Magic? I checked the site, and it says the list of dealers is coming soon.

The Smokin' Rooster is an incredible bait. I can't begin to tell how many fish I have caught using this bait just this season. As mentioned above, the weighted hook is a great method to fish it. The weighted hook not only provides a seductive fall but, allows you to swim the SM along the bottom or around structure with a greater level of control.  ;)

How well do they go through grass/weeds?

I Flip/Pitch/Punch the Smokin' Rooster in the matted Hydrilla flats of  Toledo Bend & I use Strike King's Offset Round Bend Saber Point Hook in 5/0 because it lays closer to the lure body allowing to come cleanly through the grass.

Well, since I fish every Rage Tail bait, it's hard for me to

pick a favorite! For anyone that hasn't fished the Smokin'

Rooster, you're cheating yourself. This is one of the most

versatile soft plastics I have ever fished.
