Fuel Additives (Ethanol)

Recommended Posts

Now that most have had ethanol in thier fuel systems for a while, I wanted to see what you guys liked for additives.  I just had to replace all my fuel lines and primer bulb that were rotting from the inside out.  Now that I'm stating fresh, so to speak, I want to incorporate some type of additive with my fill ups to combat the negative effects of ethanol in the fuel.

There are a number of products available, but beyond the claims on the label, I don't really know what is better or what is needed.

Appreciate any input from you guys!

edited to add:  I've always used Stabil in the past and see that they too now have an ethanol version.

I am an advocate of StarTron.  I started using it about six years ago when I bought a used boat that had a 90hp Mercury on it.  The motor ran terribly and was very difficult to start.  I started adding the StarTron with every tank-up.  The motor started running better and better with each outing, until, after about five outings, it purred like a kitten.  I have since sold the boat to my brother-in-law and he uses StarTron also.  There's never been another problem with that motor.  I now have another boat with a 150 Merc on it.  You guessed it, I add StarTron with every fill-up.  Another advantage is that StarTron is a fuel preservative.  My boat has sat for months with fuel in it during the winters, but has never failed to fire up.

I dont run ethanol fuel. I have a few places in about a 10-15min drive that has E-Free fuel. Check the sticky at the top of this section and see what you can find near you.

I have used Star Tron and Mercury Quickcare. I haven't had any problems with either product. One of my good friends dad is a tech and he told me both are good products, but he told me I needed to use Mercury Quickleen in my motor. I have noticed it seems to run a tad smoother since using the Quickleen.

For additives, even for non-ethanol gas I run Quickare, and Seafoam.  Next tank, I will be switching to a cocktail of Quickare, and Quickleen.

Stabil Marine formula for ethanol treatment and Quickleen to clean the effects of ethanol everytime I add gas, here.  I believe in my Mercury manual it said to add Quickleen everytime.

Thanks for the replies, it sounds like there are several quality products out there.  I can get a few of the ones mentioned locally. (I'm in a small town)

Thanks!

I use StaBil in all my gas cans.  For the outboard, though, there is a place a few miles from me that sells "corn free gas".

Sea Foam ;)

Same here. I try real hard to only use ethanol free fuel at all cost but if it is not an option then I always put seafoam in the tank.
