I'm going to be throwing/trolling a Yum A rig for the next week.  All you guys that are fishing the A rig how do you get it down deep fast and hold?  My thought is to use a big bullet weight on the line with jig heads on the A-Rig.  I need to get the thing down to 25-30 FOW and hold there as long as possible.

Just add weight to the jigs.  You don't want the main head heavier than the sum of the baits - that will add to fouled baits.  If you drop it by the side of the boat, you'll see what I mean.  Determine your sink count, and count it down, and reel slow.  You can get your retrieve cadence with a short cast, and a three count.  Same retrieve, maybe a bit slower.

Tie a bad knot and try and cast really far.  I have one that is still holding in around25-30 fow and it has been there at least a month.  That's a slow retrieve...

Really though I could not buy a bite on one.

I have used the yum double up rig and I have more control over the two baits over the 5 bait rigs, and could count down with more accuracy as well.   3\4 jigheads and berkely flatback shad was able to get down fast and provide some lift on retrive to keep it in that depth.

Results marginally better.

 

 

Also, seems like there would have to be a saltwater trick somewhere out there that has been used for years. 

Rather than casting I suggest a vertical drop and drift or slow troll.

I have no idea...  the only time I ever knew exactly how deep my baits were running when trolling was when using a downrigger or when the baits were hitting bottom.

Why stop at an A rig when you can just use dynamite like a real fisherman?  

The more line out the deeper it will run. i run 5 1/8 0z keel weighted hooks or jig heads and on a long cast reeling slow its stays around 5 ft deep just slow down the retrieve as you get closer to the end of the retrieve. when trolling at 1.6 mph i can get it down to 15 ft with 100 foot of line out. Up the jig heads to 3/8 and you. could get your desired depth

Yes, definitely heavier heads like others have suggested. I might also try using grubs instead of paddle tail swimbaits---the extra water displacement of the paddletail seems to cause the rig to rise. Definitely don't have any spinnerbait blades on the rig if you are wanting to keep it down that deep.

I would imagine slipping on an egg sinker or rubber grip ones before you tie your rig on should do the job.

I think if you add weighted hooks you need to add up the weight and add that to the front of the rig so it runs level. It has to be balanced to run correctly. Then I would troll with it shallow were you can see it if the weight needs to be adjusted so it runs horizontally correct.

Your going to need serious weight for sure. 1/2 to 3/4 oz heads probably

 

Well, my main rig has LFT Live Magic Shad on the outside arms, weightless with 3/0 Light Wire

Offset Worm Hooks. The inside arm is rigged with a 1/2 oz Johnson Silver Minnow. Each arm has

a small willow blade attached near the middle. This set-up can be fished at any depth depending

on the rate of retrieve. I lost one last month in 30' feet of water.

Well,  the 3/8-1/2 heads were the trick to keeping the A rig deep.  No go on the fish though.  I threw it until my arm got sore and even trolled it a bit. 

Not the magic bait eveyone thinks it is sometimes its hot sometimes its not
