Flipping Spoons In Timber

Featured Replies

Is this a common practice? I caught part of a fishing show today and they were flipping spoons for spotted bass on Lake Shasta. Never heard of it before. They claimed the treble hook won't get hung up in the timber. I find that hard to believe. The spoons they were using did not seem like a typical spoon either and maybe that's the difference. Please enlighten me.

interesting .......

Did you see what kind of hook they were using? I have some spoons that have only to hooks and is semi-weedless or timber less... I have never thrown a spoon into timber though

I've got silver minnows. This was something different. Looks like it's going to rerun in an hour on WFN. Angler West at 9:00 central time.

They're jigging spoons in deep timber. The spoon is called a sonic baitfish.

It's not a viable technique for most of my fishing. A lot of shallow water. They specifically said to locate bait then toss the spoon. Makes sense. Is this common? They had located schools of suspended fish in the timber 10 foot down in 20fow. Most of the fish hit on the initial drop.

I've caught a lot of fish at Table Rock dropping jigging spoons next to and above timber and brush piles but I wouldn't drop one through a cedar or anything like that. Good thing is if you get snagged you can usually lift and drop the rod and the weight of the spoon will often pull the hooks loose.

Common? Very.

It's a very, very successful pattern at several lakes in CA and many of the Highland Reservoirs in the South.

Lake for flutter spoons, Hopkins, and Bomber slabs are my most used baits for it.

I do quite a bit of spoon jigging, I'd have never thought to try it in vertical timber.  There aren't too many places up here that feature that kind of cover, but there are a couple...
