Went to the private lake I usually fish at today.  The day started off slow.  It was overcast with on/off drizzle.  Was seeing lots of fish moving around in the shallows and breaking the surface but couldn't get anything to bite.  Walked all the way down the bank and 3/4 of the way back down to my car with no action but I did find a Rapala Rattlin' Rap and a Luck-E-Strike Rick Clunn Squarebill.  Then the sun came out and the fish turned on.

 

In about 20 minutes, I caught one average size bass...

 

 

One yellow perch that I didn't even know was in this lake...

 

 

And this beast...

 

 

She was just shy of 18 inches and my crappy $5 mechanical scale put her at about 3.75 lbs.  I would have been happy with just the yellow perch to keep me from getting skunked but this fish was the icing on the cake.

It's possible.  My PB before this one was longer but this one was fatter.  My scale is garbage so I don't use it often and don't have an exact weight on my past or current PBs.

Yeah, I have caught 21" bass that only go 4lbs and 18" fish that are true chunkers and push 4

Nice fish! I agree that a fat 18" fish would be around what your scale is saying. I've had some super fat ones go 4 or better but those ones are as big around as they are long.

Thanks for verifying my scale.  The fish was pretty fat.  It's a pretty cheap scale though which is why I question the accuracy.  What I really need to do is find something of a known weight so I can weigh it and see.

Fill an empty 1 gallon milk jug up with water and weigh it. It should weigh 8lbs. I do this often after not believing my digital scale but have yet to find where it wasn't accurate...

I have found most of the cheap digital Berkley and Rapala scales to be pretty accurate. World record accurate? No...but they are almost always right on with what my $300 equalizer tournament scale says. The only time they are off, it's been by an ounce or two at most, and when they are off a little it's always been on the light side instead of heavy. Where the cheap scales fall short is in durability. I can tell you for a fact they are not waterproof.

It is a Berkley but it's not digital though.  It's mechanical.  The ones where the hook pulls the spring and where the top of the spring stops is the weight.  I got it in a kit with a fillet knife, stringer and some other stuff.  I think the whole thing only cost like $5 bucks.  I need to look into getting a halfway decent digital one.

I got a nice digital scale but i never catch any worth weighing when i bring it lol
