Electrical Tape On Wacky Rig

Featured Replies

I started doing this when I got tired of loosing senkos and it seems to be working. Basically all I'm doing is tightly wrapping a strip of electrical tape around the center and hooking it through that. It's hard to rip through the electrical tape so your senko can last for a while.

Makes sense to me.  Need to give that a try.

You can also use heat shrink tubing that perfectly fits the senko. No wrapping of any tape . Just put the worm through the hole and then stretch it halfway through. Push hook through heat shrink tubing, worm and out through other side. Heat shrink tubing lasts forever and it is very hard to tear.

This.

I have heard some people using soft drink straws they get at mcdonalds and cutting them into small pieces also.I have used the heat shrink like cadman suggested with good results, some of the smaller heat shrink sizes fit finesse and trick worms good also.

All good suggestions...

I use the O rings you can find at any craft store.

Useing them saves the bait as the hook goes between it and the rubber O ring.

No reason to buy the special tool to put it on, all you really need is the bottom half of a ball point pen.

I only tried the electrical tape because I was out of o rings. I was actually just offering this as an alternative or a backup method.

I'll have to try this.

I use clear straws.

I use clear straws.

I am really interested in trying this. Would you mind explaining how you do it? Do you have to slit the straw lenghtwise to wrap it around, or are you actually able to find a drinking straw wide enough to thread onto a senko?

Before I got a pack of o-rings, I wacky rigged with my daughter's clear hair ties from CVS. I made three loops on a large diameter straw that I got from a smoothie joint (also can get them at Asian bubble tea places) and threaded it on.

Worked very well. Only weird thing was that the salt in the senko would liquefy the hair tie after about 24 hours.

Yes.  I slit the straw lengthwise after having cut the straw in 1/4  inch sections.  Put one on the worm, hook through the middle of worm and middle section of the straw.  I do it so that the straw is nearest the barb.  Don't seem to lose as many Senkos this way.

Heat shrink is probably the BEST solution for this, but you've got to prepare them.  I like Bill M's wacky tool for times I'm on the water and don't have time to shrink up some stick worms.  Electrical tape sounds like a reasonable solution - always have a roll in the boat toolkit.

For 5" Senkos and Wackos, you don't have to do anything but cut a piece and slide it on.--perfect fit with no heating or no tools.

3/8" electrical heat shrink tubing

That's it! Purchase a  bar-b-q coal lighter and heat the tubing so it shrinks onto the worm.

You do this by cutting the tubing into small 1/8-inch strips; running the worm through the tubing until the tubing is in the middle of the worm; laying the worm on the side of a table and placing the tip of the lighter under it; switching on the igniter and turning the worm with our fingers until the tube is tight against the skin.

Do a bunch in different colors and sizes, including your Zoom finesse and trick worms.

May I suggest using the 3/8 size on the Senkos and the smaller size on your finesse and trick worms?

The tubing will start to get loose sooner or later so be watchful and if necessary bring the lighter with you to reheat the tubing.

Sometimes the bluegills, crappie, catfish and smaller bass will take the worm in their mouth and run with it, pulling it out of the tubing. When this happens keep the tubing for future use and put on another bait.

I use the 1/4" electrical heat shrink tubing on Zoom Trick and finesse worms (see avatar). I don't heat it with those worms either.

If I want an exposed hook point rigging with those worms, I just insert the hook the same way as the Senko rigging.

Just thought I'd ask one question to the guys about the heat shrink tubing.  I use  3/8 diameter tubing 1/4" long. Sometimes , I think that it is too short and the worm has a tendency to be pulled off. However, with a 1/4" long piece I get a lot of worm action. So what length do you use, and does it hinder the action of the worm as it falls? Thanks for any info or suggestions.

The word "action" could mean anything. What I attempt to do is not impart any "action" and let the slow fall be the attractor. Thousands of bass caught prove to me that it works.

The length I use is enough so I can use it multiple times before I replace it.

3/8" - 1/2"  in length is what I use. I don't measure it since I have done it thousands of times,

I use 2 O-Rings and criss-cross them and then pass the hookpoint through where the rings cross. Super simple and keeps the hook at 90 degrees to the bait which I feel improves hookups. Everyone I've shown this to has tried it and never looked back. Could be wrong but I think by action cad meant that enticing shimmy or wiggle as the bait falls.

Forget the tape and o-rings, the heat shrink tubing is a much better way

No offense to anyone who uses a different way to do this but I like the heat shrink tubing, as it is simple and easy for me. Thanks Wayne P and everyone else for the replies.

I was just offering this as a quick on the water solution to use if you forgot to use the heat shrink tubing or your out of O-rings or what ever since nearly every angler already has a roll of electrical tape somewhere. I never meant for this to be a permanent rigging solution.

I like people that give all kind of input to the forums, that's the only way we learn. If it doesn't work for me it might work for someone else. Information is here for everyone's use. Yes I do have a roll of electrical tape in my boat, and better to use that, than nothing at all.

That's what I was trying to say, but some people were thinking that I meant it was the best way ever. It's not. After so long the electrical tape will loose it's "sticky" and fall off, but I'd rather have a piece of tape fall of than my senko when I'm trying to load my rod up.
