Most Productive Depth For Jigs/plastics

Featured Replies

I know there are many factors, but what depth is your most productive for keeper bass throughout the year when fishing jigs? Thanks....

Bank shallow to 25' ;)

Pretty much this, except 35+ somedays

Thanks, so are you guys saying that you basically catch the same amount of fish from 0 to 25? The reason for the thread is that I read an article that mentioned a specific depth, so was trying to do a little survey. Thanks.

Unless you are comparing the same body of water, the actual depth is meaningless. You are going to catch them where they are, and not catch them where they ain't.  And surprise, surprise, that's going to change with the seasons, go figure.

It all depends on the day and lake.

If i had to say where i caught more fish it would be around 10 feet or so.

All in all most productive for me would be about 8-15 ft. for where I fish.  I do catch fish shallow and deeper but the bulk of them come from this depth.

I keep detailed reords of every trip out :)

Spring & Fall: bank shallow out to 12'

Summer & Winter: 12' out to 25'

My records show preference of depth but rather for season.

Since ya force to pick a depth it would be 15' +\- 3'

Yea but Catt your detailed reports are skewed because you don't use a jig very often.  :laugh5:

Nah...only in Spring, Summer, Fall, & Winter ;)

Thanks for the responses. The 8 ft range was the one mentioned in the article as being a good depth year round. Most of my fish are caught in 8 or less except when I'm out on points.

Most of the lakes that I fish aren't over 25' deep.  I get most bites around cover or structure, so I'll say whatever depth those are at.

Catt, you know what would make good reading literature is you posting some of your logs! It would make for a great read. While you discuss some of your catches in the Toledo Bend thread, i would greatly enjoy reading some of your daily logs/statistics.

shimmy, no you wouldn't, totally boring ;)

Nothing but weather conditions, water conditions, lures used, # of fish caught, & the detailed where.

That's such a vague question... Time of year, weather conditions, water temperature dictates a lot. I have weighed 27-28lbs for 5 spotted bass in 50-60ft of water in winter, and then flipped a jig in 4ft of water for largemouth during the same conditions. Jigs work in 1ft of water all the way down! Once you find them in one spot, they may only be there that day, week or month, then move deeper or shallower. Makes fishing fun, but frustrating!
