Ok...Big time Rookie question. What is the difference between a #1 hook and a 1/0 hook?

  • Hook size is probably the first thing an angler thinks of when buying hooks. Most are smart enough to know which hook is the right size for the fish they are after. Sizes fro most manufacturers range from the very smallest freshwater trout hook at a number 32, to the very largest gamefish hook at 19/0. There is no world or industry standard method of measuring hooks, but here in the US, the measures go from the smallest size 32 (which is barely large enough to hold between two fingers) and count down. As the number decreases, the size increases all the way down to a number 1 hook. At this point the number changes to a designation of “aughts” or zeroes. A 1/0 (pronounced “one aught”) hook is the next larger size to a number 1. A 2/0 is larger still, and this numbering scheme goes as high as 19/0.

The size breakdown from smallest to largest looks like this:32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 11, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0, 5/0, 6/0, 7/0, 8/0, 9/0, 10/0, 11/0, 12/0, 13/0, 14/0, 15/0, 16/0, 17/0, 18/0, and 19/0

All of these hooks come in a short, regular, or long shank version. The shank of the hook is the part between the eye of the hook and the bend.

Safe to say 3/0 gets most texas rig applications done.

1/0 Hook is one size larger.  #2 hook is one size smaller.  Google it up.

Hook sizes differ between mfr's and style. Sizec1 is one size smaller than size 1/0. Check out Barlows online tackle and look at hooks.

Maaaybe. Depends on the size of plastic you're moving. I use a 4/0 on 6" models, and below that I use a 2/0, and sometimes a 3/0.

I keep waiting for some tackle manufacturer to roll out half-sizes, or maybe even a size 0 hook to fill that gaping void in the market.

I use several different brands and sizes. Probably Gamakatsu 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hook the most.

I'm not Jonesing for 3.5/ 0.

Yeah, I don't see any "gaping void" in the hook market.  There is a hook in every imaginable size, style and brand.  I see no need at all for half sizes.

Eagleclaw used to make half sizes...i bought a whole bunch featherlights witb teflon coating ang lazer sharp.only problem is that teflon makes them slide out of plastics eay to easy

When you compare hook sizes how do you determine it's size?

Answer, the mfr's label. There isn't a standard to measure hook size because each style hook is different and each mfr determines what the size is.

Comparing sproat worm hooks to round bend to straight or off set or wide gap should clearly illustrate this fact. 2/0 wide gap off set may be a larger hook then a 5/0 round bend. Mustad 4/0 round bend may be larger than Gamakatsu or Owner 5/0 round bend....no standard! How could anyone contemplate 1/2. Sizes?

I usually just get down a pack of hooks from one maker and compare them to the same size hooks from another maker.  Then I compare both to the plastic I want to throw.
