Recently bought a bunch of Elaztech baits to use here in South East Texas in the winter. Yesterday was the perfect day to try them out. Fish suspended 3-4 feet of the bottom in 18-22 feet of water. Relating to shad schools but not really under them or in them.

After 20 minutes with one missed bite, I switched to a Z man creatures, basically a floating brush hog. First cast was a 3.5. Caught another smaller fish on that bait. Next up was a Strike King Z Too floating fluke. Same result except this first cast resulted in a 4.5. At this point my buddy went Elaztech as well. We caught 12 bass draggin a C Rig and 11 came on floating baits. He caught 4 on a strike king Elaztech trick worm. The Z man saw tails also caught fish.

I dont know how many guys out there are using floating baits on a C Rig, but Ill be ordering more Elaztech baits today.

I was fishing 30 lb braid to 12 lb flouro with a 1/2 oz tungsten weight and force bead above the swivel. 2/0 gamakatsu ewg hook on the bussiness end.

I do well in winter with the Zman French fry and a 3-4' leader. Think its called Centidedz.

Try the Rage Tail Shrimp.  Trust me...

Years ago I used a brush hog type bait with a foam ear plug inside it. Caught fish on that bait for a year like crazy. AS it would keep the bait about 2ft off bottom. And then for some reason just stopped fishing it. Also used to put a piece of Alka Seltzer inside the hollow bait. That worked some but not like I thought.

I like the Zman FattyZ and Zinker on a Crig. Going to try their Flappin CrawZ and Palmetto Bug on one this year also.

My most effective C-rig bait is the Rage Tail Eeliminator.

Sometimes the floating baits are the ticket, sometimes they won touch them if they are hugging the bottom. When the fish are 2 -3 ft off the bottom Id prefer a drop shot to keep my bait horizontal in the water, not straight up and down with the nose sticking down. But they can both work

I've been doing this for years. Started out as a walleye presentation for me and I continued to use it on the 'southern' lakes here in IL

I did something similar. I have had good luck here with a berkley kicker frog. so when I put it on a C-rig I hollow out a spot for a lindy snell float. Drag it, hop it, and even a constant retrieve.

 

Every cast was a bite. some just happened to be pikes.

Back around 1989 we were using a scumfrog that way. It worked, but was hard to set the hook on. But it did work great and more then a few people laughed about me fishing one like that.
