I am thinking about doing it. There is a place near me. That offer BJJ, Muay Thai, and some a few other things. I am looking to add more cardio to my work out. So I figured that would be a good way to go.

Just know there is no real fast back belt courses, many mini mall martial arts in a box places don't teach you crap and hand you belts when you hand them money. It's more prominent now since mma is more popular.

im 52 and have been involved since 7th grade either taking class's or teaching.

I found my favorite martial art in Budo Kan Thai Jutsu and Krav Maga....both are full contact with brutal no nonsense styles.I have been lucky never went to any ' cookie cutter ' schools where you sign a contract and in X amount of time you will have a certain rank..they are an affront to what true martial arts is about.

i teach cops and security how 'NOT' to get killed by a guy with a knife. My son is ranked in the US as the 7th highest in Budo Kan his teacher being the 5th.What the OP said about the ability ' to kick the crap ' out of most people bothers me.I have only had to use what i know twice in my life and feel a great deal of pride from the fact i have walked away countless times from a confrontation .Fighting just for the sake of the fight is without honor.

If you directed that at me. I am not worried about belts or awards. I just want to use to stay in shape. I would take boxing. But I think the nearest gym in a hour and a half away. If not longer.

Not at all, it was more to anyone.

Though staying in shape would be better achieved with a recumbent bike and elliptical

I am all ready doing that stuff. I hit the gym any were from 5-6 days a week. The only thing that is holding me back Is my cardio. No I don't smoke. I never have had great cardio. I was talking with my trainer before she moved. I told her I was looking in to boxing lessons. She said even a hour or two a week. Would really help my cardio. So cine there is no gymaround here. I asked her about Muai Thai. She said that would also work.

Shorin-Ryu, Shotokan, Tae Kwon Do and Muay Thai. Though bad knees from jumping out of planes when I was in the Army makes it hard to do now days.

Great responses! I have to say my two favorites are Krav Maga and a style they no longer teach anymore, however my dad taught it to me and he is a black belt...

How young can you start someone? I have a seriously active 3 1/2 year old who is very physical and is learning to manage it but I would like to get him in something that he can still be physical without getting written up in school :)

Many places have programs for the little ones, my youngest started when he was five. Obviously nothing to serious but it does teach them some discipline and self control

Flyfisher, start now. Find a reputable school, talk to the sensei etc. Dont go to a school the promises a blackbelt in a year.

I know a guy that has that stuff. He says they work really great. He said he will loan them to me. I just forget to ask him when I see him.

Me no.  My former business partner and still my very close friend was a tournament martial arts combatant, I have seen his trophies and plaques.  Now we are 68 yo old, but back in in his prime he stood 6'4, 210# big boned and a large frame.  After Viet Nam (which he never discusses) he did some instruction for the Detroit Police dept.  I have never seen him lose his temper.  As things would have it I had a surprise visit from him a few weeks ago, he was doing some kicks, it was lighting fast and I was really impressed considering his age.  He still works out hard, weight is only 230#, I wouldn't want to be the guy that ticks him off.

My daughter is testing for her second degree black belt in 9 days. She has been doing this 3-4 times a week for almost 8 years now.

Very helpful in promoting self-control, promoting self-confidence, and the quiet calm that she can walk away knowing full well she can, if absolutely necessary, take care of any bullying issues which are so prominent in schools these days.

only if Greco roman and freestyle somehow count.

More importantly if actually competed still I would most likely get tossed around, and my pride would be just too much for that now.  Retirement is official for me.

before enrolling any kids always go sit in on a class or two.no school would object to that.I always try to find out when they test their black belts for rank advancement i can tell more about a school by watching that then anything.

young kids..should not have contact.Kata's and structed repsonses.when the get older make sure they go to a school that allows contact,as they get older they need to be in a full contact school. If you never know what it feels like to be hit the first time it happens somewhere other than the school its a shock. We always test anyone who comes to class regardless of how many black belts they have.We have found far to many schools that never allow contact and these guys are just chewed up at the school. You dont need to kill each other wear protective gear but i myself have had more than my fair share of sticths from sparing..been choked out more times than i can remember..(really scary the first time)..funny story my son kicked me in the chest so hard it left a bruise where his toes and the ball of his foot hit me..could see it clearly...the wife could never understand that one...lol..i came out of the shower and said 'honey look where Corey kicked me'..yeah should have given that one a little more thought...

Anyone from my area i can put you in contact with the best schools and teahcers.

I am doing p90x right now....not really cardio though but great workouts.  I haven't done the insanity workouts.  Not a big fan of cardio for cardio's sake....
