I remember an episode of Hook and Look where the smallmouth were very curious and would swim right up to Kim Stricker.  Pretty cool video.

Something I noticed at 2:47 was not one of them hit that crayfish until it moved. Reinforces the  idea of having an erratic retrieve, pause and jerk etc...

Shows that curiosity smallmouth have.....I've seen numerous times that smallmouth will come runnin , check out your lure , and either hit it or swim off after a brief inspection...I try to keep in that mindset when fishing for smallies by assuming one is checking my bait even if I don't get bit.
