What makes you want to buy a new lure or color?

Recommended Posts

Does it just plain catch your eye in a catalog or on the shelf?  Is it because of something you read in a magazine article?  Or is it just an out and out attack by the bait monkey? ;D

I already have more lures than I need for my kind of fishing.  When a new catalog comes in the mail these days, I usually just flip thru it and put it in the magazine rack.  However, in the last couple of years, I've taken a writer's (or pro's) word on something and have actually done rather well on what I bought.

Strike King RedEye Shad.  Up until KVD started winning with it, my lipless go-to was a Cordell Super Spot, Chrome/black back.  I got pulled in by the RES/Sexy Shad craze, and frankly it's been a total winner.  Sexy Shad/Chartreuse Sexy Shad/Ayu have all been great colors for me here on Ky Lake.

Hag's Tornado.  Picked up on these from a magazine article.  It was one of those things that caught my eye from the photos and videos I watched.  I grabbed a few bags online and it quickly became my favorite lure for shakeyhead fishing.

KVD 1.5/2.5.  Ok, I swallowed the KoolAid again and picked up two of each (they were free...won a gift certificate).  Don't know if they'll work as good as advertised, but first chance I get they'll be in the water.

YUM F2 Shakalicious.  One of those things that just jumped at me from a catalog page.  Looks like they will work very nicely on a shakeyhead...so I popped for a couple bags.

Swim Jigs.  Popped for three of the Uncle Josh Swim Stalker Jigs.  Couldn't help it after watching two separate fishing shows, one with Edwin Evers and one with KVD, both instructing on fishing a swim jig.  Had heard about it, but never tried it.  Now I will.

Any way, I'm about out of money for this years fishing supplies, so hopefully nothing else is going to grab me before it's over ;)

honestly what makes me buy a new lure is reading these forums ;) every time I read about something I have not ever used here it seems like I end up buying it... I gotta stop... :) lol

I tend to buy baits by color, and style...Most of the water i fish is stain to muddy so I buy darker colors...

Generally, the one thing that makes me want to buy a new lure is having money in my pocket.  ;)

I've found that I buy less tackle when I'm broke.  ;D  Notice I didn't say that I stopped buying tackle when I'm broke, I just buy less.

Generally, I only buy stuff that people I respect

recommend or on occasion, see demonstrated. A

couple of examples are Mile Whitten demonstrating

the Fat Ika, Gay Blade and Swarming Hornet/ LFT

Live Magic Shad in the BPS tank. Another was a Pro

introducing the Senko in 1997!

At any rate, I rarely (never) buy a lure that just

"looks interesting". My color selection is even less

imaginative, usually "natural" and/or "dark".

I just like buying tackle, always have and likely always will.  That said, I have become a bit more discriminating over the years largely due to the fact that 90% of my fishing is done on the upper Mississippi River for Smallmouth Bass.  Anymore, it has to look like it will fool those river Smallies before I consider buying it.

Having none in my bag and getting a good butt waxing on it will send me to the store.

I buy stuff that is recommended here or by some of the local anglers. I believe a bass is a bass, but some stuff works better in certain parts of the country. I try to keep colors natural. Shad is normally the first color I will try.

The pure curiosity of the bait working or not  ;)

I try and stick to my simple principles when it comes to lure color selection, but it doesnt always work...I hate the bait monkey :/

At the same though it has helped me widen my perspective of what will be productive. Just this past year I ordered a few translucent cranks, and at times they out fish my other favorites 4 to 1. Now I just like to experiment along with bait companies who come out with new and exciting colors.

Lure selection is loosely based on the results of a select few who fish waters similar to mine who appear to have the same fishing style as I do. They don't know who they are and it will stay that way. ;)

Lure color is based entirely on colors I have had previous success with.

I am similar.  I am usually late to the lure buying frenzy when a new "hot" bait comes out because I want to hear about the lure from a few people whose opinions I trust.  Regarding colors I generally have dark baits, light-colored baits, and a match-the-hatch or natural bait.  If I loose all of the baits of one of these colors then I will go out and buy more of that class of color.

If I like it I buy it.

If I have the money I buy it.

...... and end up fishing with what I always fish.

I 'm a tackle junkie !  ;)

Ditto on this.  Also, I won't buy baits that I feel aren't for conditions/situations I fish in.  So many anglers have overflowing gear they will never get a chance to use.

I may buy baits when I am fishing a "foreign" area. example: I am from Canada and going to Florida...LM baits may run a bit bigger than usual. cool thing is, I bring them back and use the bigger stuff here with nice results!

Maybe if I see a lure that I use in a colour that I think will improve my catch back home, I'll grab it.

I'll buy new lures if it is highly recommended by folks at my local tackle shop, there are bunch of great guys that hang out there. Actually, I have received many great advice here and especially from RW.

I've played this game enough years now, I find myself pairing down. I used to buy all sorts of new stuff when it came out and found I was not using a lot of it. I have narrowed my gear down to 4 colors and lure choices that work just about everywhere. Now a days I do buy something if it will work to meet some condition on the water that my current lures won't address exactly right. It makes me laugh when I think back to all the items I have donated to my Jr. Bassmasters club.

I'm with RW.  Last year I picked up several "new" baits and in colors I would have never considerd until I my buddy bludgened me for not having them and then showed me their worth on the water.  Strangely I did the same for and to him though. It pays to have an open mind and an open wallet.

Rule #1 If it comes from a renowned company and gets a good review from someone like TT or one of my Pro Friends then I Buy it.

Rule #2 If I see the action in a tank or tank video and it looks like it will kill some fish or is unique in some way I Buy it.

Then I buy 1 and test it after an intensive trial period if it catches fish and I find confidence in it then i buy ten of each color I like

My color selection is usally restricted to these genres

hard baits

Golden Shiner-ish

Shad-ish

Bluegill-ish

Chartreuse-ish

Soft baits

Black and blues

Purple and blues

Green Pumpkins

and watermelons

or mixes of all of the aboves like big o craw or bama bug or mo craw ect.
