They catch a lot of people with those designs

The real question is why not. I honestly don't think it matters it just looks cool baits are made to catch fisherman first then the fish

As long at it has a mostly white belly they can put anything they want on the top of my top water lures.

You really want to match the hatch as much as possible. Although it's a top water bait certain colors trigger more bites. Top water baits do occasionally roll on their sides, go under water and even slight dive head first. That flash of color sometimes is enough to make fatty girl commit. You will know this to be true when you see several huge bass following your top water bait but not commit to inhaling it.

I get what you're saying, but I see lures as functional art. I appreciate a nice design, even if it doesn't catch me any fish.

I use Bone with an orange belly

bone (white) and black only colors needed 90% of time - but it's bass fishing, I have dozens of topwaters in all kinds of neat colors - 200 frogs from pink to chart. and beyond

Cause fish don't buy lures, fishermen do...

Don't limit your thinking to a bass being only directly underneath your lure. Fish might be viewing from directly underneath, but it is much more likely they would be looking at the lure from an angle, with the sides totally visible.  So the sides do matter.  It's the tops of the topwater baits that don't matter.

 

All you need is one with a white and red belly for daytime and one with a black and red belly for nightime. Just make sure you have some red in there , it looks like blood to the fish. If you dont have red on it, just get some red nailpolish and put some streaks of red down the belly. In my opinion, design on top doesnt matter at all. Good luck with your topwater fishing.

I usually only pick topwaters by if it's light, dark, or flashy. I like to have one of each of those and don't get too worried about having one of every other color. 

I don't know about you (op) but I have top waters that dive under and come back up and others that sit into the water. Those two allow fish to see around the entire bait

If you looked at the giant mess of hard baits stored in my boat you would see 1 commonality across every brand, style and type:

1.) white or bone

2.) black, blue, brown or darkish

3.) baitfish, sunfish, bluegill, shad fishy pattern

4.) loud colors- chartreuse, day glo orange, pink etc

That covers different water clarities. Doesn't have to be complicated, they just need to see it. Something in each style that falls into each of those categories will have you ready to go.
