Road Runners And Bass

Featured Replies

There are a few baits that I rely on just after ice-out and a 1/8oz. white maribu Road Runner is one of them.  The only reason I mention it is because I don't see much, if any discussion about these little gems. I like to break them out when fishing is tough and when the ice is first off the water is one of those times. The guys at my club think I'm a little off because I throw them on baitcasting gear, but it works for me. I picked up this chunker today with ice still on the south shore. post-7608-0-85117600-1396119115_thumb.jp

As Jimmy Houston used to say, you can't fish them wrong as long as you fish them slow. and that is no lie.

I had good luck with roadrunners heads (1/8oz white with chartreuse eye) with a Zoom tiny fluke trailer at the end of December. My friend was killing it during the same time. He caught a 5+# LMB and lipped it just as his line snapped.

For whatever reason, I've stopped throwing them recently. Might need to bust them back out soon.

Oh there are a bunch of beetle spin guys still out there - the originals are pretty scarce

They be killer for bass in our coastal marshes!

I've caught several bass, including a 4 pounder, on roadrunners this year.

I agree, all the little spinners are under-touted today. They were pure poison on Jersey's little northern-strain bass.

My favorite was Wordens Rooster Tail (head spinner) followed by the Beetle Spin (over spinner), followed by the Roadrunner (belly spinner).

Roadrunners are the original fish head spins and a killer for about any kind of fish.
