Rod For Chatterbaits And Spinnerbaits

Featured Replies

Read an article today on KVD, he says he has started to use glass/composite rods for chatterbaits. He says they stay hooked up better. What are your thoughts and what rod do you use for those techniques?

Powell squarebill rod! It's a composite rod with a lot of backbone and a forgiving tip.

Saw the same thing from Brett Hite after he won Lake Seminole. Haven't tried it yet, but next time out I'll be using my Dobyns 765 (glass).

I use a 6' 6" MH/F St. Croix LTB with a 6.4:1 Lew's Speed Spool and have never had an issue with losing fish on bladed jigs or spinnerbaits.

I use an iRod genesis 2 "stone cold vibrating/swim jig" rod and I've never had a fish come un buttoned.

I use a champion 734c. It still has enough flex IMO. I think a bigger difference is that guys were using heavy braid and a heavy rod.

Switch to a softer rod or heavy mono/fluoro and I think it will help

I use dobyns 733

733C/734C for me, type of cover determines which one I use.

Glass/Composite doesn't tell you much about the action of the rod being suggested. It may hint at a slower action but that's not necessarily the case. I see spinner bait fishing as similar to swim-jig fishing and use similar action rods appropriate for casting the lure weight.
