My mom bought a new 2012 Honda CRV a year ago and it still has that new car smell. It makes me sick to my stomach and I want to get rid of it. It's been a year and I can't believe it's still there.

 

I'm not 100% sure if it's the new car smell or from the fabric protection spray they put on because that was included in her package. Regardless, it's terrible and it smells like a strong chemical. I've been in probably 8 new cars recently bought by family and friends and they all don't have any odor. With my moms car, once I open the door, I get a big whiff of it in my face.

 

How do I get rid of this smell? I've tried to air it out, but you would think after a year of use, the smell would be gone by now. I'm thinking about buying 5 packs of baking soda, the ones you use for the fridge and putting one under every seat and in the trunk area. I thought about Febreze, except I'm sensitive to these types of products. Any other more natural suggestions?

A cheap cigar should do it.

Seriously, if the baking soda doesnt do it the seats, carpet, mats and headliner may have to be shampooed.

That may be the only way.

If not take it back to the dealer, that cant be the only car that has happened too, they may have a solution.

I would dang sure have it smelling different. Especially after a work day. The interior would have either a nice fly ash smell. Or smell like coal dust mixed with sweat. Depending on where in the plant I was working.

Got to be careful around that fly ash. It will kill you deader than dirt. Quicker than two jiggles of a jack rabbits ass. Its basically all the stuff they filter out of the smoke before it gets released through the smoke stack. Best I recall it contains: inorganic arsenic, lead, copper, hexavalent chromium, and lots of other healthy goodies.

Try smoking a pack of Camels in the car. Tends to work wonders.

Either that or take a dump on the seat and rub it all over the upholstery...both methods would have the same effect.

Well having read the whole post. Natural you say.....

Get a dog. Feed it. Wait a few hours and follow it around outside. Pick up what the dog leaves behind and deposit in said car.

Take a fish wrap it in newspaper. Deposit in said car.

Cut some pine twigs. Wrap in paper. Deposit in said car.

Buy a bunch of cedar chips wrap in something. Deposit in said car.

Anise works quite well too.

Smoke a clove in it. Then it will smell like a cured ham.

Have a bonfire next to the car with the windows down and doors open.

Send me a SASE. I will mail you either a pair of my gym socks, or a jock strap. Depending on the type smell and strength of smell you want. Those things could strip epoxy paint from a wall.

Be creative. Smell the natural world and go from there. I still think the fly ash smell will kill the chemical smell in a matter of seconds.

I'm fairly certain they do. I know the one we just left used a ton of it. However, it was also a massive 4 unit steam power plant. 4th largest coal burning plant in the United States. This one we are at now is smaller and only has two units on line if I recall correctly. Alot older too.

LOL, I want to get rid of the smell, not exchange it for another.
