I love to parrell rip rap for smalleys with a jerk bait. I use 10 lb mono on a medium spinning rod. I have to check and retie my knot quite a bit. I have also lost quite a few fish and expensive jerks. I have switched all my jerks over to #5 oval but it still usually breaks where the line wraps around the split ring. I may try to upsize to a #6 but I think I also need a new knot with double line thru the eye. Not sure what that not is called.

I use the san diego jam for mono/fluoro. You may need to get more abrasion resistant mono

I use a palomar knot, I haven't had any problems with it.

I also have been using a palomar without any problems.

Most time I remove the split ring(if it has one) and use a rapala knot. Otherwise palomar, sometimes I will use a norman speed clip with palomar instead of a split ring too.

Loopknot and leader for all hard lures, no exception.  I use the lure right out of the box, don't remove a split ring or add one.  I may lose a lure due to a snag or cutoff, a fish just ain't gonna break that knot.  I'd be checking the drag on the spinning reel.

I always take the split ring off and always use a loop knot.

I've always used a Palomar knot with jerkbaits and I haven't lost a jerkbait in 3 years. That was using 10-12 lb fluoro and recently copolymer.

Ive caught 130 plus lb tarpon on 50lb braid tied to a 30lb flouro leaver via an albright knot with a palomar as my terminal knot more than a few times!

I might be missing something, maybe bass are bigger, more powerful, make longer harder runs than salt water fish, hence the need for all these super dooper knots.  From a guy who fishes saltwater about 340 days a year both on my own as well as with a guide and charter, just about everyone uses a loopknot for lures.  Clinch or an improved clinch for terminal tackle and the bimini knot has been replaced by the alberto, which is faster and easier and just as strong.  What's a saltwater fisherman really know anyway..........lol.

My buddy and i uses to argue between the palomar and loop knot when we tarpin fished...i always tied a palomar and he always tied a loop knot...we never did figure out the bettet knot but we did straighten some circle hooks!

God i miss tarpon fishin...and beach snook!

Both knots serve a different purpose, palomar good for hooks, swivels, jig heads, I prefer an ordinary clinch. Loopknot for lures, I keep it simple.  Another thing I don't have to log is which knot I used for what bait, it's always the same for me.

Simple solution to your problem of the knot breaking at the split ring is to use a snap. You can leave the split ring on or remove it as you wish. Your problem is probably not the knot but the wear from contacting the split ring at the wire split.

I agree, but I always give Dwight grief about the snaps (I call it a Yankee technique, LOL).  When tying knot unto split ring be aware so that knot secures over the double wire on the opposite side of the split-ring start.

I agree with Dwight. I remove all split rings on any hardbait I have and use a snap instead. Have never had an issue.
