Hey all. I'm getting ready to put together a rod/reel combo for some deep cranking. I'm thinking I need something at least 7 1/2' long, MH & Moderate. Does that sound right? My budget is under $400 for both rod and reel. I'm fishing an old abandoned stone quarry with very deep, steep ledges and points. I'm mostly gonna be throwing Bill Norman DD22's and similiar. I like the looks of the Revo Winch 3rd Gen, but have no idea on what rod to get, or if there's a better reel for $200 than the Winch. Any advice suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Bps cranking stick - 7'11 MH for the big plugs.

Bps pro qualifier in a 5.4 ratio.

This is my deep plug set up and it handles like a dream.

My deep setup is a gen2 Revo winch on a 7'6" MH/M Veritas & 10lb fluoro

If I was willing to spend $200 for a deep cranking stick then I'd have no problem dropping an extra $40 for a Dobyns Champ Glass Crank Rod 7'6" Med Hvy

7 1/2 foot glass rod, MH with a soft tip and a lot of back bone. You need a higher gear ratio on the reel to run it down to the maximum depth, and stick to 10 pound Fluro. Specific rods are kinda hard to name considering that's mostly preference.

check the 13 *** crankenstein with a *** reel or a bb1 pro.

Dobyns champion 805cb is a heck of a rod for deep cranking!

I'd move up to a heavy moderate myself for the ultra deep stuff. I would also spend the majority of that budget on the reel, a Daiwa Zillion crazy cranker. But that's just me

I have the gen 3 winch and like it very much. If you are going to go glass for your rod, stick with floro. I tried mono with a glass rod and missed way too many fish! The floro helps with feel as well as a reduced amount of stretch. A glass rod will have all the give you need when hooking a big fish deep!!

I'm a Falcon rods guy but their deep cranking rod was not doing it for me.  Bought the Duckett 7'11" deep cranker and like it a lot.

13 *** Crankenstein and a used Zillion would be what I'd be looking for.

I think the search for any cranking rod begins with the decision about material, glass, composite or graphite, and understanding the benefits and weaknesses of each. Deep cranking is very productive and enjoyable when you have the correct equipment, it is not a lot of fun if you don't. I can give you my preference for deep cranking setup, but it certainly does not mean that it will be comfortable with you.

pair that rod with a Lewis BB1 and you won't be disappointed. It might be a little over your budget but you can usually find the Lews on sale

I've got a Duckett Ghost MH/F 7' with 12# mono on a Lews Speed Spool 5.4:1

. Havent missed a strike with it yet, and casts like a dream.  Whole set up cost about 180.00.

Hey Jeff,

What do you consider more important or where would you rather spend the bulk of your money?  The Rod, or the reel?

The gen 3 revos are great reels in my opinion I just couldn't make the comfortable in my hand to fish all day.
