Im lookin to pick up a few tatula 100's really soon, and I was wondering if you could answer a few questions. 1. Is there any black play in the handle, even if its the slightest amount of play? 2. Is there any play between the handle and gear box? and 3. Ive heard something about the tws causing some line fraying problems from braid, ever experience it?

Mine don't have much, if any, back to back handle play, but you can slightly move it in and out. A couple of the knobs (I have 3 Tatulas) have a little play and could probably use another shim. I am just too lazy to open the knobs up and add a shim at the moment, because I don't care. I have used braid, mono, and fluoro on mine for extended periods of time and have experience zero issues with any kind of line. The only problem I had was one of the reels had a rough bearing, the one that sits right on top of the AR-bearing under the handle. It got gunked up and wouldn't turn well. I flushed it out really well, oiled it back up, and now it's super smooth.

I wouldn't put too much stock into the t-wing grooving some are claiming.  Based on posts from another site, nobody has actually sent a reel back to Daiwa to date and Daiwa is actively looking for reels with this problem.  I don't know why anyone would make up something like that but like I said, no one is stepping up to get their grooved reels fixed.  I have 2 Tatula Type R's and couldn't be happier with them.  I haven't noticed any back play in the handle or play between the handle and gear box.  If there is any, it's very minor.

It's easily the best $100 reel available right now if you don't count buying used or things on clearance. I have 65lb PP braid on my type R and use it every day and there's no signs of any grooving.

Jrob, if you get the chance can you check your type r's to see if theres anyplay on the handle and between the handle and gear box? Its something i cant look past, lets just say i have a bad case of OCD. If theres no play in the type R ill gladly pay more for them over the 100's

I checked my Tatulas, neither had any back play in the handle.  Both had a very small amount of play between the handle and gear box.  It took a decent amount of force to get the handle to move in and out and it doesn't move much but it does move.  My reels also have a very small amount of play at the knobs, like Tywithay mentioned.  Overall though, the reels feel very tight.

I'm not sure if I have backplay or not in the handle. I switched handles on mine though. I've never noticed any play though. As for the grooving, I use 2 Tatulas, one for frogging and the other for punching. No grooving at all. 

The claims of grooving are supposedly done with pure fluorocarbon lines, not mono or braid.

I heard the claims of grooving were with braid because it holds dirt,sand,debris in the line.

The 2 claims of grooving on TT are both from fluorocarbon, apparently. 

I'm sure you know this but they can be found quite a bit below retail.

I have 2 tatulas and the back play is almost non existent if any at all I can't notice it. Also this grooving issue people have been complaining about I have seen nothing like that even after using 60lb fx2 Sunline for months.

Had to double check the type R last night, as I had already notice this in my Tatula... The anwer is yes on the lateral play but no on the antireverse backplay for both reels.

I am sending back my 100HS for the grooving. Here are the pics

 

 

 

I can run a tooth pick over the grooves and it gets caught there. I do not believe this is caused by any fishing line. My 2 grooves match what others are posting exactly and I believe that there was a die in the manufacturing process that punched these out. Some got through the QC. It happens. Will let you know what Daiwa tells me about this. I did use the BPS Flouro that is made Seaguar and the others I have heard also use Seaguar as well but the grooves match to evenly for it be fishing line in my personal opinion.

Did you happen to notice if the reel was like this before you started using it?  Definitely interesting.  Doesn't look like wear but I appreciate you sending it back and making an open minded post instead of the reel sucks. haha  Interested to hear how Daiwa responds, I hope they make you happy with the result.

Only a little bit of play in the handle and knobs, no problems in the TWS with 40 lb braid (light frog rod).

No Unfortunately I did not look before. Will look at my daughters to see anything on hers tonight. She has not used hers that much at all. I will also be at Bass pro tonight so will look at a new one to see if anything.

Talking with Daiwa, they have seen only 2 others that did this. Both were spooled on a machine at high speed. makes sense with high speed and heat. I did not do mine with a machine but have tried 4 (I Think, maybe 5) different lines on mine. Even though I do not use a machine, I do reel rather fast when spooling so maube heat does play a factor. A buddy of mine that works at BPS ask me to bring it in to look at and offered me full exchange for cost towards a Curado I so I could not pass it up.

Seems like if it was heat from line being spooled on, there would be at least a little discoloration on the TWS, might be a way to check.    The other thing that makes me think it is not from line is the fact that there are two grooves, when the line is being spooled on it sits in a very narrow grove in the guide so it seems it would be limited to just one small area and not two clearly defined grooves.   

 

I can't understand why the line would rub in either of those two positions.
