The biggest jig I throw is a 1/2 but it is mainly 3/8 oz. same with my t-rigs. The cover I fish is usually pretty well light to moderate. Not really many lakes with a ton of heavy cover. Is a heavy powered rod too much?

I don't want to lose too much sensitivity but I want a for sure hook set. So I don't know which rod to choose 7' 3" MH or 7' H???

Its not "too much" as in it will work, but I like a medium heavy for jigs not in heavy cover but I don't use jigs except for everyonce in awhile so don't mind me haha

3/8 oz + Trailer = Med Heavy

1/2 oz + Trailer = Heavy

You are probably better off with Medium Heavy as an "all-around" rod.

Depends on the company. Most medium heavy rods will handle your weights.

I agree with Arv,  I use a Powell Endurance 714 which is a heavy action and I have been throwing 1/4 oz jigs with a trailer and 5" senkos with a 1/8oz weight just fine. Is it ideal?  Probably not but I have been fine throwing them when I need to downsize

Go with a MH Veritas rod. It's slightly stiffer than a "normal" MH and it's pretty sensitive.

I have 3 7' MH veritas rods already. They just dont have the backbone for jigs or deeper water that I'd like to have

Gotcha. I use a Shimano Crucial MH-XF and it works great. Plenty of back bone on those.

The action moderate, fast, extra fast relate to how the rod bends from the tip down about 1/2 the length of the rod. Trying to compare one brand from another is frustrating at best without being able to touch and feel the rod.

A very popular rod for casting jigs is Dobyn's 735 jig/worm rod. 73 = 7'3" the 5 = power, very good rod for your application.

If the MH is not enough rod, your only option is to go to the Heavy, after 3 MH and not being happy I think you would be better off buying a Heavy and not another Med. Heavy,,,,,,,

Not sure I follow.  Are you saying word rated power/action rods vary greatly but those rated in numbers are all more accurate from brand to brand?

I think what he's getting at is, for instance, in the Dobyns line up, theres the champ 765 fiip that is labeled as a MH rod (the regular casting rods in the dobyns line up that are MH are the 3 power.). Dobyns breaks up their rods into the different categories. within the FLIP line up, the 765 is the "MH" of the FLIP bunch. If you were to put this rod along /w the rest of their rods in one group of casting rods, it would be a Mag heavy. 

 

There is also no universal industry standard on rod powers so handling them is really the only true way to get a grasp on its capabilities. Simply going by line/lure rating is okay but some rods perform better towards the top and some towards the middle.

Well I was leaning towards the Duckett ghost 7' 3" mh, but I hear that their rated different. Like a heavy is more like a typical MH and a MH is more like a medium. Anyone experience this also?

7'3 MH would be much better than a 7' Heavy for your original post.
