Never Been So Glad I Left

Featured Replies

A few weeks back, i went night fishing at one of my favorite ponds. i was slaying them on buzzbaits at about 3:30am when i started listening to my surroundings a little more closely. i noticed two coyotes howling back and forth to one another from opposite sides of the field i was in, but that didn't bother me. What did send chills down my spine was the sound of a woman screaming. i knew it was an animal, and not one i wanted to mess with, but couldn't remember what. being alone, unarmed, and 300 yards from the car i decided to call it a night. i've been regretting leaving early ever since, until yesterday: my friend shared a trail cam pic of a mountain lion taken in the same area. now it's gone from regret to relief.

So, what about the woman screaming?

I assume she was screaming cuz the cougar was having her for lunch.

it's been said around here that mountain lions sound like a woman screaming.

Looked it up on youtube and what i heard was definitely a female mountain lion screaming. found a video of one making the same noise that ran me outta there.

WV , You just need to learn to make a growling sound like an irritated Black Bear...... :eyebrows:

OR a Sasquatch.

That TV show did some investigating in West Va.

It was probably most likely a bobcat, they scream exactly like a woman and it will scare the living sh@# out of you! I know it did me.

I've heard it to. Definitely sends chills thinking about what is near you in the darkness. Buddy's must be some avid hunters to have trail cams out this time of year. Watching food plots I assume?

It might have been a Snatchsquatch?

Bring some kitty treats next time. Problem solved!

Awful sound when your unarmed isn't it. Lol.

Ok a funny story for ya.

One night I noticed some fellas frog gigging the pond across the road from my house. They had been at it for about 30 mins while my wife and I watched from the front porch. When all of a sudden two ground hogs got in a fight in the woods pretty close to them. Darnedest racket you ever heard. Sounded like two pit bulls fighting a bob cat with lots of tree rustling. . I'm sure there still telling stories about that night and wondering what kinda of tearable monster livesin the woods here.

Only reason I new what is was is I seen and heard the tree rustling the day before when a big ground hog came threw. He was wider then the path he was on. Sounded like a bull coming threw.

Lol y'all and the sarcastic comments. my buddy does have a food plot he's keeping an eye on. the black bear around here are enough to make ya jumpy in the dark, throw coyotes, mountain lions, and the occasional bobcat or weed grower defending his crop and just about any noise that time of night will make a man nervous

Cougars, whether human or feline sound about the same.

I have a few trail cam pics of the first confirmed cougars in my neck of the woods. Knowing they're out there doesn't bother me - they tend to steer clear of humans, unless cornered, and tend to eat smaller/more helpless game.  Plus, I always carry some kind of noisemaker with me.  Still, I worry more about meth heads.  I don't know why, but the only thing I truly worry about running into in the dark is a meth head.  Probably because we have more of those here than cougars.

That woulda scared the living goosebumps right off my arms.

Perhaps some strong bear spray would be wise to have on hand, if you don't pack.

Consider yourself lucky for getting the opportunity to hear a big cat (I'd be in ecstasy).

I love the sound of fox barking in our backyard, we also have bobcats but unfortunately they're not vocal.

If it were a moonlit night, I'd be inclined to stalk in the direction of the cat to get a glimpse.

Not having a firearm wouldn't bother me (for starters, predators don't scream when they're hunting).

I've heard one after midnight once on my folks property... very chilling.  Game wardens told us we were nuts, saying "there ain't no mountain lions around here!"... that is, until we snapped a picture of one laying on the back porch. :)

Good for you to trust your instincts.  It's hard when the bite is on!

I've heard lots of crazy noises at night, but I'm usually in my boat so they don't bother me too bad. Raccoons make a heck of a noise when they fight with each other. I heard a bobcat killing a raccoon one night, would have been nerve wracking had I been on the bank. One time I really had my knees go weak on me I never heard a thing. I was night fishing a semi private lake when someone bumped the side of the boat and saw something large in the water next to the boat. When I hit my headlight and saw a big alligator head I about screamed like a little girl. We don't have many critters you have to worry about eating you in Kansas, so I was not mentally prepared to see something like that. I'm sure whoever put the plastic alligator head off the end of the dock thinks their a real comedian.
