Chatterbait Setup

Featured Replies

I use 12 lb fluorocarbon on a 6'6" med heavy rod and a 6.4 baitcaster.

7' medium/fast  15# abrazx on a 7.1 Lews tourney pro.  I skip mine A LOT under docks...

7' MH fast rod

6.4.1 reel

12-15# Fluorocarbon depending on cover

MH 4 power worm rod, the same I use for spinnerbaits, Tatula R high speed with 14 lb Super Sniper FC.

I fish 1/2.0z Chatterbaits just above emerging grass tops with a slim 4" swimbait trailer! similar to a lipless crankbait. Chatterbaits are usually a second choice lure, prefer Scroungers first.

Dobyns 733 and 734 (depends on style of chatterbait),

Daiwa T3B

15# fluoro,

7'1" *** black H, 7.3:1 13 ***, 20lb Seagur red label florocarbon and I use 3/8 to 1/2 oz C and C custom baits rock and roll style. My favorite color is black and blue with a dirty sanchez RI little dipper trailer on the half I'll go up to the skinny dipper

Powell Endurance 714

Shimano Curado 200e7

20# FC Sniper

I use a *** also w/ a Curado 200e7 and a big hammer 4" swim bait as trailer + 15# sufix copolymer

6'10" MH Fast, 7.1:1 reel, 12# Yo-Zuri, D&M Custom Baits Piranha Swim Jig 1/2 & 3/4 oz

7' MH Fast Clarus (old out of production cork handled version) with a Chronarch 101B 6.3:1 spooled with 50# braid. If I have one tied on I'm fishing it in the heaviest grass I can get it through so I never have a problem using braid.

Dobyns champion 733

Shimano curado I

Sunline sx1 40lb

Dobyns 744 with 14 pound fluoro in open water

Dobyns 745 with 17 pound fluoro in light/moderate vegetation

Dobyns 804C with 50 pound braid if the grass starts getting pretty thick

Same gear for spinnerbaits and swim jigs

12lb Sniper FC on a 7' MH Fast action Lews with a 6.3 BB1; same as any spinnerbaits.

I have a few Setups.

Open water - champ 705cb with 14kb suffix siege. This rod is my go to moving bait rod so the mono is for all purpose.

Light weeds - dx 744 and 15lb invizx

Weedy - champion 734 and 30lb braid

Honestly you can throw a chatterbait on most anything in a pinch. Some guys what a parabolic bend and some guys fish it like a jig and want something heavy and powerful.

Med Hvy  rod with good parabolic bend and 65lb braid. If I need to I can always put on a leader which would most likely be 17lb fluorocarbon.

Seems most everyone uses a MH rod. I have found that my bite to catch ratio is way up with a M power rod. The fish can really load onto it before you set the hook, so your not pulling the hook too fast like with a MH rod.
