Cutting Weedguards Off Jigs

Featured Replies

Does anyone completely cut off the weedguards on their jigs? Not trimming them but getting rid of the whole thing.

I'm sure Cadman or Mike at Seibert Outdoors would make them w/o the guard and you wouldn't have to bother.  I put wg on most of my jigs except the swim bucktails.  You must have a lot of open water.

I dont cut any of but time to time I will fish a jig that I havent glued in a weed guard.

I have been fishing my jig design that dates back to 1971 without a traditional weed guard because I hate weed guards, they are fish guards! However.....the lakes are deep structured with sparse cover, mostly rocks and some wood. I use a spring to hold a section of worm to the jig eye for a weed guard.

Fish dart head jigs with exposed hook with a finesse worm.

The only time I fish a traditional weed guard jig is in heavy cover and that isn't often.

I make my own jigs, I don't make them with weed guards.

Like Tom said... I believe they can interfere with good hook sets, no doubt... But I thin mine by maybe 50 percent? Gives me a little protection and also makes hook ups go up, it's worked well for me!
