I was just curious if you've had any luck with using swim jigs with only trailers and no skirt. I have some naked swim jig heads lying around and I am debating whether I need to buy skirts for them.

I've been using a swinging football head with a swimbait on the back, a swim jig wouldn't be that much different. 

Try it, you never now. It might be your next go to jig. Whats the worst that could happen? You try it, fail, look stupid, everybody laughs at you, you cry yourself to death,now I feel guilty for encouraging you.

I've caught plenty of fish with no jig at all, just a hook and the trailer.

Yup, just the jig with a grub can be deadly!

Ok, you've all convinced me. I'll give it a shot.

a jig head with a grub can be considered a swim jig so yes, you can use them without the skirt. I make my own and I can tell you that I often will leave the head untied and just use it to fish a large grub or swim bait but in stained water a skirt and trailer can really make a difference.

Freedom Tackle makes an interchangeable jig head design that works as a swim jig (without a skirt). 

I used them a little at the end of the season last year and they showed real potential. 

Fall is a big swim jig season for me especially with a swim bait trailer so I'm really looking forward to fishing this bait more. 

 

The rig comes with a hook that's not bad but I've been pleased to find that just about any hook will work.

 

The Hydra head works well deep in open water or over cover.(I use an exposed Laser Trokar Flipping hook)

The Stealth head is at it's best a little shallower and the design comes through cover well.

(I use a tex-posed EWG, either a Laser Trokar Mag Worm hook or an Owner wide Gap Plus).

My wife loves and does pretty well with marabou jigs with twister tails and other grubs and/or hulas.  I never really took them seriously because I felt they were a walleye or crappie lure.  But, then, I'm not too bright.  She doesn't get a lot of big ones with them, but oranges and yellows consistently draw pretty decent numbers as long as they're fished erratically --- they work best on the drop....as opposed to skirted and other swim jigs which can often be as productive horizontally.
