Sun Baked Cranks?

Featured Replies

Has anyone sunbaked any of their crankbaits and caught more fish on the lures after baking them?

I baked a,,I think, Rapala Helsinki shad CCR-5, and caught a couple of small bass.  Not saying this is the route, or end all be all, but I did like the look of the lure coming through the water.

Curious, who does this and how much success you have with it?

I'm curious, what difference did it make?

Not neccessary. Sometimes you may want to tone down bright colors though depending on water clarity. A baked firetiger for instance

It fades the color out.

yeah, it fades them.  I mainly do it to knock down the gloss on some of the cranks.  Not sure if it matters, I guess just a preference thing.

I've never done it and really don't see the need.

There are so many color combinations and finishes available that if I wanted to tone down the brightness of a crank Id buy one like that.

If I couldn't, I just use some 0000X fine steel wool. (Which I have done)

I do it to all my bright chartreuse cranks. I travel all over the state for my job so attaching them to my dash is just something that is neat to see day in and day out.

Allways looking for better ways to do something..

I haven't done it because I felt that I could get a more consistent end result

by just doing them by hand.

Aren't you constantly flipping them over and over?

I let 1 side bake for 5-6 days. It is a long process so i do 6-7 cranks at a time.

Is this not the concept of the Rapala DT's that were produced a few years back. Rapala Ike’s Custom Ink DT Crankbait.

  • Author

yes, from my understand it is the basis for Ike's custom Ink cranks, but i dont think it is of the DT's in general.

Yeeeahhh i tried this over the summer. No one told me how long it takes. I thought a few days would be great, but not even close. All summer, those dang 1.5s slid all over my dash, and even caught my girlfriend a few times haha in the end i could barely tell a difference, so i may or may not ever try that again.

Used to do it all the time with the old wooden crankbaits like Poes, etc., but unless you still fish those, paint technology and lure design (transparency, etc.) has become so good that it's really not necessary any more, IMO.

Hmm, Luckycraft has warnings on some baits, radiation will cause some of their baits to burst/swell, idk, never did it to cranks whether balsa or plastic... Interesting though

Never done it on purpose but I have some that spent too much time laying in the spots I toss baits in the boat that got faded, haven't noticed a difference in how they catch fish though.

  • Author

yeah, I am not sure if, or how much a difference it makes.

I'm mainly sun baking the backs of the cranks, I will post pictures of baked and not baked after I get back from errands.
