Hi From Northern Virginia

Featured Replies

My name is Rob, and I'm just getting back into fishing after a Marine Corps career kept me moving for thirty years.  I'm amazed at the changes in rod, reel, line and bait technologies since I was growing up in Florida and fishing every chance I got - fresh or salt.  Realizing now that I'm a complete beginner, but getting a lot of help from the many online sites and YouTube videos on knots, rigs, and techniques.  Any advice on good lakes for bass this time of year, or thought on how to get started fishing for the elusive Muskie?  Would also like to find a good (patient!) guide for some fishing/instructional work.  "Tight lines", everyone! And thank you BassResources for the great site!

Hello Rob and Thank You for your Service.

Welcome to BR ~

I went through a similar re-acquaintance with bass fish a few years back after a military retirement as well.

My advice is make a modest initial investment until you can update yourself on the newer stuff and can then purchase with confidence.  Handle as much different types / brands as you can.  TW has a reel DEMO program that allows you to "try before you buy"  which is pretty cool.

Good Luck

Hi A-Jay.  And thank you for your service too.  Coast Guard helped me out big time on a couple of occasions.  Thanks too for the good advice.  I did invest in a mid-priced rod and a Lew BB1 - certainly not my father's bait casting reel!  Been practicing in the backyard, and with different weights of baits in a little mm lake near here (this may take some time....lol)

Thanks again, and best regards,

Rob ("Irish")

Greetings and Welcome to the forums Rod :)
