Thinking about rigging up my jerkbait/topwater rod with copolymer line (looking at McCoy Mean Green).  Couple questions come to mind:

1. What size copoly would you recommend for these applications?

2. Do you back the reel with copoly or just spool it straight on?

3. What knot is preferred with copolymer?

2. Even though it is relatively cheap, I always use backing. There is no reason to use twice as much good line as needed IMO.

3. Any of the widely accepted knots will work fine. I am currently using the San Diego Jam knot.

12# is what I use. No need for backing, but if it saves you line go right ahead, but I never do. Any knot. I use the trilene knot.

3) Any knot is fine, make sure you tie it correctly is all that matters. I use Palomar.

I use P-Line CXX so my experience may be different than yours, but here's my thoughts:

1.) For jerkbaits I would go with 8-10. Topwaters I use 12-15. I'd rather use 8 or 10lb for topwaters than 12 or 15lb for jerkbaits.

2.) I don't worry about backing for copoly, but you could use it if you wanted too. Doesn't really matter.

3.) Again it's all your choice. I always use a San Diego jam when tying to my lure and an Albright knot if I'm going to use it as a leader.

1. Rod...and thus lure size...determines line size.  8# on Med rods, 12# on MH rods.

2. Always use cheap mono backing for fluoro and braid.  Often use it for most other types of line as well.  Especially for lighter lines.  If I bought cheaper bulk spools of copolymer I probably wouldn't use any backing for the 12#.

3.  Uni is a favorite,

That is the same line I use for a lot of my set ups, anywhere from 10-17 lb and absolutely love it, but to answer your question...

1. 10 lb for jerkbaits most of the time (especially in the spring when the water is cold)

2. I don't use a specific type of backing, just whatever was left in the spool (co Polly is cheap enough as it is)

3. I usually use a palomar knot or an improved clinch knot

I dont use backing with copoly, you can usually buy large spools cheap. I use 8lb yozuri hybrid or 8lb cxx. The yozuri diameter is slightly smaller then the cxx and a bit less memory as well. Both lines have amazing strength for line diameter though.

yea, ill be trying the 4 and 6lb on my finesse spools soon 

I ordered some 12# Mccoy copoly.  going to give it a try. 

Will also be ordering some 8# or 10# yo zuri and try that as well.
