Looking for a starter flipping and pitching rod.

 

One of my local sporting good stores as a 7-6 ex heavy fast action with micro guides discounted.

 

Not sure of make and model a friend told me about it just course what you guys think about the micro guides before I go and look at it.

I use micro guides for everything.  I don't really flip but they don't negatively effect pitching at all.  

I have a 7'11" with pacbay minimas on it, I like them just fine, I also use rods with macros and tradition sized guides. Pay close attention to the inserts before you buy, it's easier to miss a crack or damage on micros... But they work great on the right rods...

The smallest, lightest guides that will pass the line and necessary connections and withstand expected stress levels are the best choice. On a flipping/pitching rod where you will use 50# braid and a leader a size 4 or 4.5 works fine.

I think the guides on the Duckett's are a size 4.  They look tiny but don't detract from casting performance, unless you're trying to pass leader knots.  I use 20 lb fluoro with size 4 guides all the time.

The Micro Magic I replaced the guides on for a friend had 3mm. Just doesn't work in a KS summer, when the cottonwoods make the water nasty.

That is another scenario that micro guides don't excel in.  I just don't have to deal with cottonwood trees.  I also don't have to worry about freezing temperatures much and I don't use leaders.  Micro guides definitely aren't for all circumstances.  The weight reduction is well worth it for me though.

I prefer a spiral wrap for weight reduction. I'd much rather use less guides than smaller guides.  

We do not have many cottonwoods out here but many plants around our lakes put off cotton-like seeds.  They clog up the micro guides. They keep the line clean, though.

Another situation you may not want micro guides is if you fish during the winter. I have to switch to a different flipping stick during the winter because the micro guides ice up too fast and make it even more impossible to fish.

Nay for me, I had a pitching rod with micro guides and my fluoro to braid leader knot going through the guides drove me nuts. It "flows" through "normal" sized guides much better. We also have a couple weeks every year hear where the cottonwood trees spew there crap around every body of water. That stuff would clog up micro guides so bad,  I almost wanted to break the rod over my knee. No micros for me ever again.

Have done it with micro's, minima, and standard.  Micro's if you're going to use a leader.....18"'s keeps the connection out of the tip and works fine.  I don't have to worry about freezing temps.  Haven't noticed any difference in all three for pitching and flipping with braid or when using the shorter lenght leader.
