I am a co-angler and I am trying to set up my rod and reels so I can be a little more versatile for next season of tournament fishing. Keep in mind I am not interested in buying anymore rods at the moment so I have to work with what I have ,which for western NY  I believe I have enough  rod and reel combos(for now) to successfully tournament fish . What I was thinking of trying is putting 50 lb. braid on a 7:1:1 Lew's Tournament Speed Spool Casting Reel and a 7ft. MH St. Croix Mojo Bass Casting Rods. This rod has been tested to be like other brands heavy action rods. I would like to use this setup for multiple applications and apply different fluorocarbon leaders for the different applications or use the braid when needed for a frog rod. Also   If I were to attach a 17lb flouro leader to the 50lb braid to cast around docks with a jig or Texas rig is this a good idea?

There are quite a few ways to join the braid and FC. My personal preference is a uni to uni knot. Holds strong and casts through the guides pretty well. Google tying fluorocarbon leaders to braid and you'll get quite a few options

 

Imallaboutthatbass: Your thinking sounds fine to me. Just choose a proven, strong, knot to join the leader to the main line and you should be good to go.

I like the blood knot for braid-to-flouro because for me at least it's simple and the fastest to tie. Alberto knot works great as well.

Just a heads up on the uni/uni,  sometimes the braid cuts the mono or FC.  Not something you want to find out with a big fish on.

This is the reason I use a Bristol knot which is identical to an Alberto except the leader is wrapped over the braid.

I too prefer the Alberto/Modfied Albright

I like the Alberto because the braid encapsulates the leader and the knot ends up being really small if done properly.

I use the Alberto for all the reasons stated above. The Albright might be a little smaller when tied correctly, but I find the Alberto easier to tie.

I've tried the uni to uni in the past and it always ends in heartbreak. I always thought it was because I was trying to join small diameter braid (10 lb. power pro) to much thicker fluorcarbon (10 lb.). It's driven me to use small barrel swivels to join the lines instead, which forces me to use a smaller leader and makes casting a pain.

 

I'll have to give the Alberto a try, but I'm somewhat gun shy. I've lost a lot of good fish from losing my line-to-line leaders.

Weird. Uni-to-uni has never failed me. Try using a few more wraps on the skinny line.

Practice tying the Alberto Knot until you gain confidence in the technique. The knot must be PERFECT.

It will not fail.

The only time I ever had the Alberto fail on me was one of the first times I tied it. I didn't sinch the knot down tight enough, so when I casted the whole thing came undone. After that I never had one break on me. I would get hung up and have to wrap my braid around a tree branch and pull, so I wouldn't cut my fingers. The alberto knot would always come back and the fluoro would've been broken at a knick in the line.

I used to use the Albright, but it seemed to usually be the weak point when I was breaking off on a snag, etc. (never had a failure on a fish).   I've used the Uni-to-Uni when diameters were more similar, but experienced the same thing.

 

The Alberto is the way to go.

Thanks guys - I'll give it another shot with the Alberto when the ice thaws.

I just spent an hour practicing the Alberto knot and man, once I got it down, it works every time. Great stress test results, with the fluoro snapping well ahead of the leader knot nearly every time.

Excellent!   By the time spring gets here, you'll probably need to practice it again!  ;-)

 

Heck... it's almost two more weeks before winter even starts!  Arghhhh!
