Elvis Presley - Runaway:

Yes, today is his birthday.

 

I still remember the exact place I was when I heard the news on the car radio that he had died.

 

Same with JFK.

I went to Graceland and stayed at the Heartbreak Hotel last year. I highly recommend it if you are near Memphis.

I find it hard to a reason to celebrate the life of anyone, lost way too early due to excessive drug use and morbid obesity. 

The stresses of fame and fortune...

 

It is difficult for us mortals to even fathom what that level of fame must be like.  

 

So many dead and 100X's that get on the stuff and live to tell the tale.  

 

Only they can convey what it is like...

 

Celebrate what their art brought to us.

That is a very cynical view IMO. Elvis was just like the rest of us, a flawed human being with great strengths and weaknesses. Because of his enormous talent and success he was tempted with many of the things that have destroyed great men and women throughout history. I think it was a tragic ending, but that doesn't diminish his impact on our music and culture.

IMO, Jan 8 should be a national holiday.

There are thousands of entertainers that go through life without feeling the need to destroy their lives with drugs, or the over indulgences that Elvis fell victim to.  There are also others that can't handle the fame and fall to the same trappings that he did. 

 

I feel sorry that he threw his life away, but I am not inclined to worship other's tarnished idols.

Lund Explorer I am not a disciple of the Church of Elvis. Celebrating someone's accomplishments and worshipping them are two very different things.
