which one would you prefer, strike king KVD jerk bait (suspending) or rapala x-rap (suspending)?

Strike king. I own both and the SK has always been my top producer I own it in strobe shad.

I've only used strike king crankbaits and used the rapalas for smallmouth but thanks for the input and one more question i bought a sebile jerkbait, ever thy them?

The X-Rap is a great bait and gets my vote. Most of the people on here, though, will tell you to by a Lucky Craft Pointer.

No one said to pay retail.

X Rap is good for smallmouth because of its bright colors and action.mit can be good when the fish get a little more active as well. I really like xCalibur jerkbaits though.

I hated the Strike King KVD jerkbaits.  Very inconsistent (float, suspend, sink, sink fast).  Between the 2 it has to be the X Rap.  I would say that the Lucky Craft Pointer is the best overall...  Right now the 100 and 78 sizes can be found at DSG for ~$5 each on clearence.  I have 2 dozen pointers and have never paid more than $6 for one.

i bought a couple because for some reason the last 2 months every calibur jerkbait, crankbait, and lipless crankbait have been on sale for $2.99 so i picked up a couple but haven't gotten to use them yet

For the $3 price tag at dicks they can not be beat. They're baits rank in some of my favorites, in any $ range

If I had to pick one of those it would be the Strike King but neither of those baits are even in my top 10 favorite jerkbaits.

Top ten!?!? Blue... You've got a problem... Step away from the jerkbait section ;)

I'm a jerkbait junky and I cannot lie! Heck, I can come up with 10 jerks I like better in just 2 different brands;

LC Pointer 78

LC Pointer 100

LC Spazz

LC Slender Pointer 97MR

LC Pointer 78DD

LC Pointer 100DD

LC Staysee

Duo 120

Duo 100

Duo 100DD

Toss in the McStick, McRip, STX and STX JR, H2O jerk shad, Soul Evolve 5 Deathdrop, Perfect 10,  Elite 8, and super rogues, plus some KO 110's and Vicious jerkbaits, the baits mentioned don't have much room left in my box.

Do all those baits have different enough actions and tendencies to make a discernible difference in how and when you catch fish with them? What are the differences?

Size, diving depth, available colors, some are louder while others are quieter, some have very little action while others have a very aggressive action. Does it truly make a difference? Not always, but sometimes it does and that's reason enough for me to have them.

That and keeping the tackle monkey satisfied, right...? I already bought more jerkbaits than I had originally intended, plus I know there will be a purchase or twelve at the upcoming fishing shows in the next couple of weeks... He's a cheeky monkey I tell ya.

While we're on the topic, what do you look for in a jerkbait reel? Weight? Line capacity? Retrieve ratio?

Something lightweight and easy to palm, capable of casting fairly light baits. I prefer a mid range retrieve ratio but it's really a personal preference on that one.

X2. When it comes to jerkbait and topwater reels, you want something you can palm and make precise moves with.
