There are about a billion types of jig heads out there for jigs now. When do you know when to use them?  When is a Round head best? When will the Arkie excell?  How do you personally decide what to use? Do you have the heads narrowed down to one or two styles?

I throw 3 styles.

Arky heads for flipping any type of cover.

Bullet heads for my swim jigs in grass.

Football heads for hard bottom.

I've made myself 1/2 dozen of the 'snootie' head last year. It is basically a flip and swim mix. I'm slowly switching over to those so I only need to carry 2 styles of jigs and cover my needs.

Are you talking for like tipping a plain jighead with a plastic bait or for selecting a certain jighead style for a skirted jig?

Football: Stroking or Crawling Through Rocks

Swim: Swimming Through Wood and Grass

Bladed Swim: Grass

Arkie: Similar to football, but I'll also bring it through wood because it comes through better than a football jig

Flippin: The name says it all

Finesse: Similar to football, but for lighter applications

That about sums it up

I use three styles:

Arkie and brush ( flat bottom) for pitching to cover.

Bullet head for swimming.

Weights I prefer are 1/4 and 3/8 for the mostly shallow lakes in my area.

A bullet head or cone shaped head is made for grass, arky heads and other similarly shaped heads are for wood and brush and then you have your round head which is the all purpose head, it works just about anywhere but it isn't the best at anything but functions well in most types of cover and it really a good finesse head. The football head is for rocks or hard bottom in general and often sports a light wire hook to make hook sets easy with lighter lines when fishing deep, there are a bunch of other types out there but this is just a general view of common types of jigs and the best way to use them.
