Pointer Vs Flash Pointer

Featured Replies

Getting ready to get some more jerkbaits for the spring, and looking at these two. Would any of you guys pick the newer flash pointer, or stick with the tried and true original? The flash pointer has a few attributes from the flash minnow and a tungsten weight transfer system, so which one do you guys prefer and why? Im looking at the 100 size and theyre for smallmouth. Sorry if this has been asked already, did a search and found nothing. Thanks

Even though the flash pointer (115) is a little longer than the 100 pointer, the 100 is still a stout bait that gets strikes from both brown & green bass.

The Flash Pointer is a 3 hook bait as compared to the 2 hooks on the 100.

The Flash has a slight different ( 9Faster) action / wobble) than the 100 as well.

As far as size of the bait- the preference may depend on the bait that's prevalent in a system or perhaps what the bass may be on at any given time.

And just for reference, for me the pointer 128 has accounted for smb over 6 and lmb bass over 9.

Depends on what type of action you are wanting to achieve.  Like said previously the flash pointer has a more aggressive action with more sharp side to side darting action.  The pointer has good action too though.  They are both really good jerkbaits.  Lucky Craft also makes another really good  jerkbait called a Staysee.  It dives a lil bit deeper and has caught a lot of fish for me.  Most of the jerkbaits I like to fish are right around 100 size some a lil bit bigger and some a lil bit smaller but 100 seems about right most of the time.

I like both...but i prefer the pointer 100

My favorite however is the slender pointer

If I was just after smallies and looking for them with a Lucky Craft jerkbait, I'd be fishing a slender pointer, so I'd vote for the flash pointer of your two options.

I haven't fished the flash pointer, so my opinion probably doesn't count lol.

What I do know is that if the fish are on a shallow jb bite, I can get them on one of three- between the 100 Pointer, 112 Smallie Pointer (MR), 110 Flashminnow.

Good luck,

I'll be in the minority but the Pointer 100 is the bait I'd get. I got introduced to the flash pointer last fall and there are some striking differences. The Pointer 100 has a darting side to side action and when you stop it the bait has a subtle wobble or vibration for a few seconds as the ball inside comes to rest, that is what I believe triggers a lot of strikes. The Flash Pointer doesn't have this, but instead it has a more aggressive action and a deeper roll, it was really good during the fall from 52 to 57 degrees, but once the water temp barely hit the 50 degree mark the bait lost its appeal, the fish really wanted the Pointer as they were beginning to hit on the pause after a few seconds but when the Flash Pointer was working, they would hit it the very second it stopped. The early spring is going to be a Pointer but when the water temp climbs into the mid to upper 50s, the Flash Pointer becomes a player but the fact it is more aggressive and seems to work better at higher water temps makes me think the Pointer 100 would be a better choice since it does well in a wider range or water temps.

So to generally summarize: the warmer it gets, bass want a more active, erratic bait...? Generally speaking of course...

I generally prefer a slimmer profile like a slender or flash when the bite is tougher. through my own experience I start with:

Pointer 100 or stacey king on LMB

Slender, flash, or minnow on SMB and trout

Cold water equates to slower fish metabolism. As the water warms so do the fish & yes they will more actively chase baits.

Regular pointer, I think you should strongly considering the pointer 95 silent, the size and profile are just perfect, the action is beautiful, and fish don’t seem them very often. American shad is my best producer but they have plenty of great colors.

Pointer 100 is still the best bait :P

I love the Pointer , it's been very good to me over the years . That said with jerkbaits I find that there are a lot of good jerkbaits and there are differences in terms of the depth they run , the type of cutting they do and other factors . This is why I have a variety of them and have found that on many outings there is that one hot bait that gets most of the bites whereas the others are not very productive for whatever reason . Then the next time it's another bait that shines . Of course there are occasional days when the fish are very aggressive and are not so particular . I love many models from Megabass & Lucky Craft but have also have done well at times with some of the Rapala's like the X Rap & Shadow Rap . The good the thing for the fishing industry is they keep coming out with new stuff and people like me keep buying them . 🙂
