Featured Replies

Blakemore Roadrunners and Sworming Hornet Fish Head Spins are two popular brands which best represent what he used.  He technically didn't use a Fish head spin but something very similar.  His father used a do-it mold to create the lure he won.

I have never used it but in his press conference after the win he described what he did.  He essentially was fishing it at the bottom extremely slow.  Just fast enough to get the blades moving.  He used a 3/8oz weight, high end bearing (Sampo) and a #3.5 willow leaf blade.

Amazing how little things go unnoticed until something like this happens.  I bought a few Sworming hornets last year on clearance and never even tried them.  Now I cant wait to use them.  LOL

I had my best day ever in terms of numbers (78) fishing with Dinky on Pickwick

during a BassResource.com Roadtrip. I rigged the Sworming Hornet with a

LFT Live Magic Shad Trailer. The presentation was to allow the lure to fall

on slack line. The moment it hits the bottom, reel quickly about 5 turns keeping

the rod still and held around 10 o'clock. Let the Hornet fall again on slack line

and repeat until you feel you are "out of the zone".  DO NOT pump your rod,

that will move the bait forward, not up. Think "dying shad". 100% of your strikes

occur on the fall.

I  don't know why it was developed or who came up with it but a friend of mine showed me how to use one and he said he read an article about them being used on suspened fish out west. I will tell you that I've only been able to catch fish on them in one lake and the biggest difference is the water clarity and the lake we did well with them was pretty clear water.  Casey Ashley using it was the first time I heard of someone working it along the bottom, I learned by counting it down to where fish were spotted on the graph and then slowly reel but from all I can gather is that it is a clear water bait but I have only limited experience with them fishing for suspended fish.

I use Northland Thumper jigs in 3/8 size.  They work great for LMB

I've only caught two catfish on them.

I took an interest when I saw footage of Jimmy Houston nailing largemouth while fishing 1/8 oz roadrunners targeting crappie. Needless to say I made room in my jig box for these and will definitely be trying out the 1/4 oz ones I have.

Blakemore has been making underspin horse head jigs for decades in the smaller sizes, under 1/4 oz.

The fish head like Sworming Hornet has been around over 10 years and Aaron Martens nearly won a Classic using it back in 2005.

Anytime you have Shad schooled a underspin will work, the key is baitfish, the under spin size with trailer should mimic the color and size of the bait. Because it has a blade most anglers fish it too fast, slow down and let it fall.

I've used the BPS 1/4 ounce Triple Ripple horsehead lures deep on points and caught bass.  If the lure  sinks , I fish it on the bottom and deep. Lipless cranlbaits , same way . S K Rocket Shads are great fished that way.
