My advice, read, watch, read, watch, read, watch. You aren't going to learn much with one thread as most people have heard this question a million times.

Hello and Welcome to Bass Resource ~

You've got a ton of reading to do - and everything you'll need to know is right here.

Hi!

Welcome to the forums! You've certainly come to the best community on the internet for bass fishing!

Do you know what are the specs of your rod? (length, power, action, ex: 7' medium heavy fast). That could help us propose some techniques that could be well suited for your equipment.

Are you new to fishing in general or do you have experience fishing other species?

It's also a good idea to go flesh out your profile a little. If we know where you are or what types of waters you are fishing, you can get some advice better tailored to your situation.

One of the members of this forum runs the most popular educational fishing channel on youtube, you should check it out -- it's a gold mine!

Read on here and watch videos on YouTube(bass resource). IMO bass fishing can be as simple or technical as you want to make it that's why it is so great.

When I first started bass fishing at about the age of 12, I caught tons of fish on a 6' MH rod. I threw everything from cranks to spinnerbaits to soft plastics to top water. You can get as specific as you want, but if you have limited resources, just go fish and have fun.

What are some of your setups man. Rod, reel, line

Well I am a co angler so I only carry 5 set ups right now.

6'8" MH f - lipless and squarebill

6'10" MH f - spinnerbait and topwater

7' MH f - Carolina rig

7'2" MH xf - 3/16 oz t-rig

7'2" MH xf - 3/8 oz t-rig

I can vary what I throw, but as a co, that's all I'm comfortable carrying.

Your budget will determine the quality and quantity of your gear.  I personally have about 20 setups. learn to use what you have first before you get into worrying about getting more. what you have will do just about everything a bass fisherman needs.  I have multiple setups ready to go so that I can change baits in 2 seconds.  as you are starting out you will need to cut the line and re-tie if you want to change baits.

A little advice from my experience is to fish with what you have right now. Just get enough to cover the simple basics(some soft plastics, hooks, weights, some hard baits, etc.) As you start getting into it more and more you will know what you need, and what you are comfortable fishing.  This also lets you slowly save money instead of hitting the wallet hard in one shopping trip.  Every couple of weeks I will save 10-20 bucks and I just let that accumulate.  Before you know it, I have enough money for a new setup or some new baits.  Just take your time, enjoy what you have, and the amount of stuff you have will slowly grow.

As for what you have now, I would personally throw 12 pound line, fluorocarbon or mono.  This will cover almost all your basics.  Remember to check you line for any imperfections as well, it will save a lot of money to retie.

Good luck, tight lines, and welcome to BassResource!

For your new rig, learn on something inexpensive like 14# Big Game.
