Fat Ika Hook?

Featured Replies

I've been using Gamakatsu 4/0 EWG with a 1/16 bullet and little rubber Bobber stop, but the vegetation is so Daggum thick right now, it's tearing up my Ika's. I was considering a G-Lock.

Thoughts?

Fish the Fat Ika weightless.

I can't here right now. The only reason I use the weight is to guide the weeds over the top of the bait. Seriously thick weeds right now. If I don't use some sort of cone shaped weight or float, the Ika will get pulled off my hook.

I like to use those clear plastic screw on nose cones for skinny dippers and stuff of that sort - they don't add appreciable weight and keep the bait on the hook. I wish I could remember who makes them.

It may be the case an ika is not the right tool for the job in this case.

Well, they're catching me fish...they're just not lasting long. I'm kinda winding if maybe I should try an Owner screw lock hook...this way, the whole nose of the bait is being held on-to instead of just the center around the offset hook.

A screw lock couldn't hurt, especially if they're just tearing up at the nose. But honestly, it's been my experience that ikas fall apart pretty quick, sometimes before I even get bit. This is especially true in the thick stuff.

I always fish them weightless, and backwards.

I like to use a 4/0 ewg with screw lock keeper.

Ika's aren't the best plastic option for thick grass. even with a screw lock/beast hook option which is how i fish them. The baits still tear.

I use  a 5/0 EWG  on that thick beast

I'll give it a shot. Tube with a front rung jig had would be alright.

Paycheck Nose Job

Hook the Fat Ika backwards and weightless. Maybe switch over to a tube like others have suggested.

I wonder why some swear by the backward rigged Ika and others forward.

On the descent, a reverse rigged ika will drift away from you on slack line, which makes it ace for getting up under cover like docks and what have you.

Give the Trokar Tube hook a try.  It has a deep belly and works great on tubes.  No reason it wouldn't work well on the Fat IKA.  It has a hook holder built into the hook.
