Trouble With Top Water Lures

Featured Replies

Yesterday I had the most fun day of fishing with a topwater. I was throwing a whopper plopper and it was awesome. I don't see too many people talk about this lure. Is there a reason? Yesterday was my first time trying it and it was killing them.

It goes back to what the fish are "wanting". Some folks have the exact same lure just in different sizes and/or colors and once you change it from one to the other it will turn the fish bite on. For me, I start on top water in the mornings or evenings like already said. I use a couple of different top waters after probably about 5 casts. Popper, spook, fluke, then go to a smaller popper, smaller spook, etc. Of course you always have a top water lure ready during the day just in case you see one hit up on the top. Generally I will use a fluke especially if I am near any weeds.

Slayed them on topwater yesterday again. It was warm, little to no breeze, beight sun. All day, slow pops got bit. Easiest fishing I've had in a long time.

I had never even heard of this lure. Then I looked it up and I see why. For $18 I'd have to hide that purcha$e from the wife. I'm not above doing that for a good lure. What's your favorite color?

I got it in black but I've heard the color doesn't matter it's the action of the bait. It makes this plopping sound hence the name whopper plopper. I got the smaller size 90 that let's the smaller fish in on it. It was 12.99 on tw definitely worth it to me.

I think braid is too "stiff" for a top water. Try a mono leader to give it some stretch

Braid is perfect for top water baits. Too stiff? Braid is the most limp line there is. There's nothing made, anywhere, that's any less stiff!

This coming from a braid hater that uses it nearly exclusively on his top water baits!

Think he was referring to the lack of stretch as "stiff." Not the word I'd have used.

Finally got 3 at the pond on the super spook jr, one of them the biggest I've ever caught.  ^_^  I guess it just comes down to the time of day and if the fish are biting ;)

It was a spooky good day

Try that Jumpin Minnow again and if you watch a one minute video on how to walk the dog, the T-10 has to be the easiest, and perfect profile for ponds, pressured fish, and is a great numbers lure and big fish lure, but it walks aggressive so not all days are walking or slicing days, you can actually wake that lure and use a slight glide and pull with a loop knot and it will get bit...It casts well for a bait it's size, can't think of any like it...Been my best walker this year and replaced the Skimmer for me which was my smaller walker, I don't do well with the T-20 Jumpin Minnow for bass however, that is better in salwater, it is way too much for fresh imo.

Top water (I use braid and leader) is a killer presentation morning, noon and night, both freshwater and salt.  Don't really feel one lure is better than another, I use what pleases my eye.  Not convinced the fish care as I've been successful using all different brands as well walking vs poppers.
